Development Of A Subliminal Advertisement
When you start to develop your subliminal advertisement, you need to review, as a prerequisite, the critical points for an effective subliminal advertisement that will influence the masses:
- Create a hook that is powerful. A concept that is naturally accepted by the receiver.
- Set the belief that the information is factual and link it to logical evidence such as trusted people, places or things. Substantiate it with social proof.
- Narrate the story with enthusiasm, make it passionate and appeal to your audience's emotions. Give your audience words and pictures they can relate to.
- Encourage your audience to interact and take the next action. As your audience becomes more interactive with you and the message, the more persuaded they become.
Subliminal Advertising Example
Howard Gossage the so called "Socrates of San Francisco" and Adman Extraordinaire created an ad to oppose the "Flooding of the Grand Canyon" for the Sierra Club.His ad said "Now Only You Can Save the Grand Canyon From Being Flooded . . . For Profit." The copy goes on to talk about how the bill that would build two dams on the Colorado River and create a fluctuating shoreline based on the hydroelectric needs, would cause the Colorado River to become still water.
Influence The Masses - Spread the Message
Gossage's ad was very effective. He encouraged people to get involved, to spread the message by including seven coupons for:
- To join the Sierra Club
- To make a donation or ask for more information
- A letter to The President of the United States
- A letter to The Secretary of the Interior
- A letter to The Representative sponsoring the
bill - A letter to your Representative and your Senator
- A spare letter for a second Senator
How Was This A Subliminal Persuasive Advertisment?
The ad was subliminally persuasive because it sold conservation through outrage. It was effective on two fronts.
No one wants to see the Grand Canyon turned into a muddy lake (a future ad asked "Should We Also Flood The Sistine Chapel So Tourists Can Get Nearer The Ceiling?).
So people wrote in and challenged the bill and they became conservationists in the meantime
- The bill didn't pass
- The Sierra Club's membership jumped from 35,000 members to 50,000 members in six months
No one wants to see the Grand Canyon turned into a muddy lake (a future ad asked "Should We Also Flood The Sistine Chapel So Tourists Can Get Nearer The Ceiling?).
So people wrote in and challenged the bill and they became conservationists in the meantime

Subliminal advertising is often effective because the message that is spread (in the case of Gossage, conservation) is not the obvious call to action.
Cults never say please join us, we are destructive. They offer something that is easily palatable and introduce you to a more controversial experience later (Conservationism like Environmentalism today was not an easy sell).
