You would have to show some respect (no matter how begrudgingly) for the Japanese men who ventured out in their miniature submarines during WWII. How brave (or foolish!!) would they have been to even climb into those things? I'll stick to being a land lubber thanks.

Love subs but Nautilus is my favourite
  • nickupton Apr 20, 2012 @ 9:37 am | delete
I once read about a tiny submarine that was operated by hand crank during the American civil war. It was an amazing story.

We toured the USS Pampanito - WWII Submarine at Pier in San Francisco a couple of summers ago, was really something to see. Makes you realize how brave those young men were back then.
Thanks for sharing all this info with us!

I love submarines - the James Bond car is awesome, but my favourite had to be Stingray - the Gerry Anderson show not the US film. I loved all of those shows. I do plan some point to build a submarine robot. I'd love a submarine rid even more though! Thanks for the info there. Oh - and I absolutely love Jules Verne (apart from all the fish descriptions). Oh and I did vote for the nautilus, although the WASP Stringray would come in close second!

Great lens. I wish I had gotten to actually ride on a sub underway when I was in the Navy. I did get to at least go on a whole bunch of them years ago when I was stationed in Guam. (On the Frank Cable (AS40) sub tender...not sure if that is still there)

I had a rare opportunity to tour an atomic submarine at the U.S. Naval Port in San Diego in 1988. It's an amazing world, but I sure wouldn't want to be confined to it for months at a time like our sailors are. There is barely room to move without bumping one's head. It goes without saying we weren't allowed to take any pictures. This was part of a homeschool weekend field trip to San Diego. I brought my kids early so we could do a few things on our own first that the group wasn't doing. It was a wonderful trip.

I'd forgotten about The Hunt for Red October. What a great flick. I will have to watch it again soon. Fascinated by subs - and this is a really great lens - but I'm a claustrophobic coward who can't even handle below decks on a ship for more than a half hour; have to leave the subs to you professionals!
  • BFuniv.com Dec 25, 2011 @ 5:19 pm | delete
That 12" porthole makes it all worth while. I worked on the subs myself, good times and great stories. Thanks for the memories.
  • GadgetKnowHow Dec 1, 2011 @ 8:37 pm | delete

I can't recall the name of it, but there's a historical WWII submarine located in Mobile Alabama that I toured when I was down there a few years ago (maybe it was the USS Alabama??), you should consider adding it to your lens. :)
  • tenger Oct 27, 2011 @ 10:29 pm | delete
don't know how the navy does it month after month on one of those things. Talk about serious claustrophobia

Very interesting lens. Recently, in Hawaii we had the opportunity to take a submarine Nautilus tour, worth doing. Wish had lasted 3 times as long and gone much further, the ocean is an amazing place!

What a extensive lens on submarines.I have a lot of old war movies with subs in them. and of ocurse, Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
I would be terrified to be in one though.
  • Blessedmombygrace Jun 12, 2011 @ 8:08 pm | delete
wow. I remember the 20,000 leagues under the sea ride at Disney as a kid. I toured a sub in Baltimore as an adult w/ my kids and could not imagine spending time in a real sub. They are awesome but wouldn't be for me. Great lens!

I kind of marvel at the underwater technology of submarines. You can certainly enjoy the cool waters and the surroundings under the sea. Submarines made possible great escapades during wars.
  • reasonablerobinson Jan 1, 2011 @ 3:01 am | delete
I really like submarines too. My sons live in Plymouth the UK where you can see them docked. i learned to scuba dive in Falmouth Cornwall where you can dive on some scuppered WWI German U boats. I played for hours on a submarine game called Silent Service on my Atari ST, and my favourite films would include Das Boot and Dive Dive Dive.

  • Oosquid Oct 7, 2010 @ 2:25 pm | delete
I too can remember seeing Disney's 20.000 leagues under the sea when I was a kid. It made a lasting impression on me, I wouldn't go near a submarine for fear of a giant squid. :)
I really enjoyed this lens though.

I've always loved and been fascinated by submarines, but could never go in one, being underwater like that would make me far too nervous, fantastic lens Dave! - Kathy

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - Yellow Submarine! I hear you and join you in the fascination of with subs. Would love to go under in one. I've done underwater exploration and cave diving, but there is still more that I wish to do. Excellent and very interesting lens.

Great lens! There's an old submarine about an hour north of residence. It's called the Batfish. I've been through it several times, but never underwater. It's a museum now. Still awesome to go through it. Very small, and controls are everywhere.

PS - I have lensrolled this lens to my lens about Mare Island Naval Shipyard.
  • CCGAL Jan 21, 2009 @ 3:44 pm | delete
This is an awesome lens. I worked on nuclear submarines at Mare Island Naval Shipyard for 7 years before she was closed, so I have a deep (pardon the pun) appreciation for submarines. My biggest regret is that Nautilus left our dock just days before I got my security clearance to go aboard. If I ever make it to Groton, I'll be visiting my "old friend" in her new digs.

5* and a favorite, and a new fan, too. Great Job!

    5 stars granted !
I got fascinated with submersibles when I watched all the Titanic dives on the Discovery channel.
Few people realize how DANGEROUS a dive can be 2-3 miles down. So much can go wrong.
    Good job Dave.
