I am a Substitute Teacher!
Substitute teachers are commonly referred to as guest teachers. Perhaps this is to change the image many of us have of substitutes.
As a student, I thought substitute teachers were strange and slightly dangerous. As a teacher, I've come to enjoy substituting and its many challenges and benefits.
What is a Substitute or Guest Teacher?
A little background information.
The teacher may be ill, taking a personal day, at a meeting, conducting conferences, traveling, caring for family, or ????
The substitute teacher may or may not know the details regarding the teacher's absence. The first question from most students will be, "Where is my teacher?"
2. The substitute teacher assumes the position and responsibilities of the teacher.
I enjoy the daily tasks: taking attendance, lunch count, and collecting homework. Then there is the challenge of behavior/classroom management.
3. Students often think that having a substitute means it is a "fun" day! The substitute teacher knows otherwise. The teacher has provided lesson plans (hopefully) so that the class can continue to learn. The substitute is not a babysitter!

A substitute chooses when and where to substitute. If my husband has the day off, I can too! If I'm sick, I stay in bed.1 point

Teachers have many responsibilities before and after school like grading papers, contacting parents, attending meetings, planning lessons, organizing field trips, and more. Substitutes are responsible for a set period of time and don't have to take any work home (does not apply to long term positions)!0 points

What do you find most challenging as a substitute teacher?

Who are these students?
Substitutes don't know the students! Who needs encouragement? Who needs a little hint? Does he/she always behave this way? What is your name?1 point
Where is the bathroom?
Substitutes don't know the building. Thankfully this is a temporary challenge.0 points
Who is that?
Is that the principal, secretary, para-pro, teacher, librarian? There are many new faces at first.0 points
Is that allowed?
Does the teacher really let you run in the hallway? Are you supposed to eat M&M's in the classroom? What happened to your shoes?0 points
What time is it?
The hand on the clock isn't moving, and you didn't wear a watch! The clock in the hallway doesn't match the clock on the microwave! Was that the bell?0 points
Where are the lesson plans?
Sometimes these are conveniently located and sometimes they aren't! I have a notebook of lesson possibilities--just in case.0 points

- As a fellow substitute teacher, I enjoyed reading your lens. I am very lucky to sub for teachers who leave good lesson plans most of the time. However, I have a "bag of tricks" like you for those days where there is too much free time between assigned lesson plans or the lesson plans are poorly executed. I've been subbing for several years, but like to seek out and exchange new ideas.
In an effort to network with other subs, I started a blog devoted to this subject. http://supersubteacher.blogspot.com
