At first it may seem obvious what a home business is. However, before beginning one, it's important to have a precise definition in mind.
Let this definition be a starting point for stimulating your thinking about the various options available and the different levels of time, knowledge and skill required to operate successfully.
A home business (or "home-based business" or "HBB") is a small business that operates from the business owner's home office.
In addition to location, home businesses are usually defined by:
*Having a very small number of employees, usually all immediate family of the business owner, in which case it is also a family business.
*Lacking a shop frontage, customer parking and street advertising signs.
In the UK, a study sponsored by communications company BT at the end of 2007 estimated that over 60% of all new businesses are started from home. (Home Business Report, Enterprise Nation for BT, October 2007) In August 2008, a Daily Telegraph survey, sponsored by communications company O2, of 500 small UK firms reported that 10% had chosen not to renew leases this year intending to work from home instead.

If, for example, you are wanting to free up more time for family and leisure activities it is no good starting a business that is going to occupy every waking moment of every day. Lack of foresight and planning can leave you working longer hours and for less money than your regular job.
If you want to make more money than you are now, it's vital that you sell a high quality product or service that is in demand and profitable, while at the same time, keeping your overheads and expenses to a minimum.

Finding a business that can be done from home without requiring a lot of travel or trips out.

Creating flexible working hours and reducing them to a point that is less than required by your current job.
