Successful People and Goals: So What's the Link?
Goal setting is not new.
For thousands of years successful people, prominent citizens and civilizations have used goal setting in some form to plan and then achieve incredible feats of engineering, exploration, discovery or war.
All of the great wonders of ancient civilizations would not exist if some visionary didn't have the goal to build them. And of course, all the major military battles in history, from Roman times to modern battles, were all won (or lost) as a result of a strategy that evolved from a simple goal.
And today's entrepreneurs and business-leaders are no different. They achieve their successes by setting themselves strategic targets and taking action to achieve them.
For example, the late Kerry Packer (1937-2005) rose to become the wealthiest man in Australia and one of the country's most successful people through his media interests, despite being reportedly dyslexic and, as Kerry Packer himself said "academically stupid". Was this just good luck - partly, but he also had a strategic plan for this business empire that evolved from his personal goals (mostly to prove his father wrong, who had labelled Kerry the "family idiot") and the goals he established for his business.
And who hasn't heard of Donald Trump? How did he succeed? You guessed it - GOAL SETTING! [it certainly wasn't because of his hairstyle]
I'm sure you can think of other successful people - whether they're a well known public figure, someone at work, or someone in your circle of friends - and I'm 99% sure they've all got where they are, not because of good luck (although this may help) but because of good life management. In other words - GOAL SETTING!
In fact, some entrepreneurs are even making a business out of goal setting and helping others achieve their life's ambitions - arguably, Tony Robbins is the best known one of these [he was even the guest 'life planning' guru on the movie "Shallow Hal"]. We've all seen him enthusiastically preach the benefits of setting goals, and he is also an example of someone who teaches what he preaches.
While many people consider Tony Robbins to be the image of modern day motivational theory, Napoleon Hill (1883-1970) takes the honor of being the 'founder'.
Napoleon was born into relative poverty in Virginia (US) in 1883. He began writing for a small newspaper at age 13, before embarking on a life time of writing on the topic of personal success and achievement. He spent is whole like researching and writing about successful people - and what made them successful.
His life's work is the cornerstone of modern motivational writing, which is based on the premise that "What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve" [quote from Hill]. He reached this conclusion by studying 'successful' people, and developing 15 "laws" of success.
One of Hill's observations was that 98% of people have no firm beliefs, putting success well out of reach. But firm beliefs can also be called developed goals - and anyone can develop their own goals.
So, you don't have to be a 'Donald Trump' to be one of life's successful people - YOU can be successful too, through goal setting!
It doesn't matter how big or small your ambitions are, the best (the only) way to get there is to embrace goal setting and implement an Action Plan built around your own personal goals.
And remember that there are many rags to riches stories, including some of the successful people mentioned above - so you too can be successful!
People with goals succeed, and people who succeed have goals!
