Frequently Asked Questions about Successfully Learning a Foreign Language

1. How long will it take to learn a foreign language?
It depends. Are you living in the country? How old are you? How much time are you putting into it every day? If you are younger, or immersed in the language or you spend a few hours every day it will happen much faster. On average 6 months of immersion or 3-4 years of non-immersion is what it takes.

2. How will I know when I am fluent?
It varies but in general, if you are comfortable speaking, you can read the language well, and you understand nearly everything and you can think and dream in the language then you are fluent.

3. Do I have to spend time in language immersion?
yes, you really do in order to experience any kind of fluency.

4. Which foreign language should I learn first?
It depends on what you plan to do with it. Spanish is always useful, while French is very useful for art and literature as well as travel, likewise Chinese is becoming more relevant.

Discover the 7 Essential Elements that Guarantee Your Foreign Language Success

Are you trying to learn a foreign language but having some struggles? Here are some ideas to help you.

1. Study the language every day. That's right, I said everyday. Learning a foreign language requires you to study it daily even if it is only for 10 minutes.

2. Practice speaking out loud. If you can't find a person with whom to practice, then practice on your own with a cat or dog, or out loud with cassettes or cd's or read a book in the language out loud.

3. Listen to the language often. Get CD's, books, and videos and listen to them.

4. Be committed to studying and working on learning the language over the long term. Learning a foreign language takes time, a lot of time. It will not just happen and you need to be patient.

5. Realize that you will need to spend the money to be immersed in the language in order to obtain true fluency.

6. Focus on learning to think in the language. Thinking in the language will gradually lead to speaking.

7. Enlist help from someone else who already speaks the language and your success will increase. If you do not know anyone who speaks the language you are learning seek out help on the internet.

I went to french immersion and then studied spanish in University. Learning a second language is very challenging for adults, but is worth it. I also studied how to help adults learn to speak a second language and it came with a bit of surprise that games, pictures and props you would use for children are just as effective for adults... in fact, adults need it as well. Great lens! =)

I speak 3 languages plus my mother tongue. I have been studying two more but dropped because of lack of goal. Must say its a hard work plus, what's the most important, one MUST have a goal. And its not getting easer with the next one.
