Thinking About Adopting A Sugar Glider?

Are you thinking about adopting a sugar glider? If you are, and don't know much about this little exotic animal, you need to know that sugar gliders are not cats or dogs. What I mean by this, is that we have adopted cats and dogs thousands of years ago and therefore they have become part of the human family to a degree that we don't even realize.

When it comes to sugar gliders, however, they are still pretty much exotic wild animals from Australia. They live in the forest and woodlands in groups of 7 to 12 individuals. Being nocturne animals they feed at night mostly on sap from trees, pollen, insects and small rodents.

When adopting a sugar glider there are must do's and must don'ts that you need to know about in order to keep your sugar glider healthy and alive.

With the proper care a sugar glider can live up to 12-15 years in captivity. However, because of ignorance new glider's owners kill their exotic pets within 6-9 months. Let stop the carnage and learn how to take good care of our sugar gliders watching them thrive and live long lives.

Recognizing the 3 Most Importants Factors to Help Your Sugar Glider Thrive

Sugar gliders are easy to take of as long as you are doing the right thing. If you don't, your sugar glider might not live past nine months. If you know how to feed and take care of your glider, however, its life span can expand to 12-15 years in captivity.

there are 3 main important things you need to pay attention to when it comes to the survival of your glider and there are:

1) The Diet
2) The Hygiene
3) The Care

Of course, the food you will feed to your glider will be linked directly to its health. the 3 most important things that you need to watch is the amount of protein, the amount of calcium and the amount of phosphorus of the daily intake of your exotic pet.

Hygiene is as important for you glider as it is for you. You have to be willing to clean all dishes and living area on a daily basis. Sometimes dishes will have to be clean more than once a day because of the risk of contamination by urine and droppings. Sugar gliders don't use litter boxes you know!

Some common sens will help you to care for your gliders as well, such as avoiding to let them loose where they can harm themselves, recognizing health problems such as slow motion, paralysis, even weight gain. There are many signs that you should be able to recognize with knowledge and experience. In doubt you need to take your glider to an exotic vet.

How Much Does A Sugar Glider Cost?

Sugar gliders are not cheap they can cost anywhere from $150-$250 and when you buy one you should really buy a companion for it, because sugar gliders don't do very well alone. It is against their nature to live on their own and they might suffer from depression if they don't have a companion glider.

However, make sure you don't make the mistake of putting other species with your sugar glider, this is more often than not catastrophic.

The price you will invest in a glider will be a valid reason to make sure you can keep your sugar glider alive as long as its life span permits. If you try to cut corners to save money, you will actually lose more by simply losing your pet and the money you paid for it.
