Plum Fantastic: A Nutcracker Book for the Christmas Season

Plum Fantastic is the first book in a new series by Whoopi Goldberg about a young ballerina whose mother moves her to Harlem in order for her to have a chance at dancing in the Nutcracker.

As a new dancer at the studio, Alexandrea Petrakova Johnson (Al) feels shy and awkward. Will she be able to overcome her stage fright when chosen to dance the part of the Sugar Plum Fairy?

Becoming a Ballerina

Wanting to become a Sugar Plum Ballerina

My eldest daughter was the ballerina in our family. From the time she first viewed the Nutcracker at age 3 to dance classes age 5 to dancing on stage in Boston's Nutcracker to becoming a member of the Costa Rican National Ballet Company, my daughter has been in love with ballet.

Though ballet to me was beautiful and mysterious, ballet to her was a passion. To become a true ballerina the child herself needs that passion. It can't come from the mother no matter how much she pushes it. Will Al's Mom realize that or does Al actually have the passion within herself?"

Alexandrea's bedroom mirror had little pink ballet shoes painted around it. It sat on top of a dresser with little pink ballet shoe drawer handles.Next to her bed sat a lamp with the little pink ballet shoes on the shade Her bed had pink ballet shoes on the comforter and pillowcases.

Alexandrea's Mom had lovingly decorated it for her but it to help her imagine herself as a ballerina. No matter where she turned Alexandrea saw that her mom expected her to become a ballerina but not just any ballet dancer, but a prima ballerina that would one day dance the part of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

My daughter couldn't get enough of ballet. She dressed in tutus everywhere, danced to the bank and through the grocery store. And when she started to read, these were her favorite books which we read over and over.

Even the Christmas Tree could reflect the Sugar Plum Ballerina theme with little glass slippers and tiny ballerinas with fluffy pink or white tutus. Sparklely white lights can shine or twinkle for a magical Sugar Plum Christmas.

Sugar Plum Ballerinas: Plum Fantastic

Alexandrea Petrakova Johnson does not want to be a beautiful ballerina, and she does not want to leave her friends in Apple Creek. Unfortunately, that doesn't stop her ballet-crazy mother from moving them to Harlem, or from enrolling Al at the Nutcracker School of Ballet. Life is hard when youre the new ballerina on the block, and its even harder when youre chosen to be the Sugar Plum Fairy in the school recital! Not only is Al a terrible dancer, but she's also got a rotten case of stage fright! Al's ballet classmates are going to have to use all the plum power theyve got to coach this scary fairy!

Attending a Nutcracker Performance

The Chance to Watch Live Ballet Dancers

ballerina

Some people make it a tradition to attend a performance of the Nutcracker each year. My daughter and I have now gone to performances in Boston, Miami and Costa Rica. Where have to seed the Nutcracker preformed?

I watch the Nutcracker once a year at Christmas Time.

EagleScoutMom says:

Great lens - puts me right into the holiday mood (and it's April!) I love the Nutcracker - "Santa" has given our son a new one every Christmas for 21 years now - our mantle overflows with them during the holidays as relatives have added to the tradition as well. Each year I search for a new ballerina ornament and I put her on a spinner on the tree so the tree looks alive with the ballet - and for sure we never miss going to see a performance - usually at our local college.

I buy seasons tickets to every performance and watch the Nutcracker on DVD throughout the year.

Evelyn_Saenz says:

We watch the Nutcracker any time of year and love to go to performances in our local community.

The Sugar Plum Ballernias' Mom picks Movies for the Christmas Season

Movies for Ballet Dancers

Angels and sugarplums. Candy canes and ice. A magic prince, a dreamy young girl, a mysterious old man and a Christmas tree that grows sky high. Enter the world of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker.

These are our favorite versions of the Nutcracker until the Christmas season comes around and we can watch live performances.

Starting at about age 3 my daughter was captivated with ballet and loved to watch various versions of the Nutcracker. She loved the fancy costumes, the fairytale stories and all the swirling dancers.

She would put on her tutu and dance around the room imitating the ballerinas in the videos, dreaming of someday becoming the Sugar Plum Fairy.

These are the kinds of things that my daughter asked for as she was growing up. If you have a Sugar Plum Ballerina in your family she will probably need a full length mirror and plenty of open floor space. What a great way to encourage her to pick up her room!

We always see the Nutcracker at Christmastime live, and watch on DVD all through the year - granddaughter takes ballet lessons and at 6 years old is just delightful practicing her steps and wearing her tutu. She was in Peter Pan last year. Great lens!

I was fortunate enough, when I lived in Atlanta, to attend a performance of the Nutcracker. Absolutely beautiful -- it was in an old theatre in Midtown. Your lens is lovely! And, I'll bet that book by Whoopi is quite something!
