Sugar Ray's Amateur Career

Sugar Ray Amateur Champion

Sugar Ray's boxing career started in 1969 at Palmer Park along with his older brother, Roger. It wasn't until 1972 that Sugar Ray had his first bout when he fought in the featherweight quarterfinals of the National AAU Tournament. Unfortunately this fight resulted in a loss by decision to Jerome Artis. It was the first defeat of his career.

His next major competition was the Eastern Olympic trials where he lied about his age to gain entry to a tournament in which you had to be over 17. At the time Leonard was just 16. Even though he was a year younger than the youngest there he managed to reach the semifinals and lost to a disputed decision to Greg Whaley.

It was during this time that Sugar Ray got his nickname when assistant coach of the US Olympic Team said to Dave Jacob's "That kid you got is sweet as sugar".

Sugar Ray Leonard ended his amateur career with a fight record of 145 - 5.
