Leonard was the first boxer to earn more than $100 million in purses, and he is widely considered to be one of the best boxers of all time, winning world titles in five weight divisions and defeating future fellow International Boxing Hall of Fame inductees Wilfred Benítez, Thomas Hearns, Roberto Durán and Marvin Hagler. Leonard was named "Boxer of the Decade" for the 1980s.

- Sugar Ray Leonard has been regarded 'pound for Pound" one of the greatest fighters of my generation.
I had the opportunty to see Ray fight in AAU sanction bout with hometown sensation Terry Silver at Freedom Hall in 1972, Ray was 16 or 17 years old. Sugar Ray won on a split decision. Having just missed out on the 72' Olympic trails becuase of his age.
As a professional boxer Sugar Ray was gifted with superior hand speed, superb punching power, and agility. In the championship fight against Wilfredo Benitez in 1979, Leonard knocked down Benitez with a straight left jab(indicative of his punching power in either hand). The Thomas Hearns fights along with the fight with Marvin Hagler solidified his status as one of the greatest "Pound for Pound boxer of my generation.
Having lived next door to Marcus Anderson, 3-time National Golden Gloves Champion, 6-0 record as a Lightweight and former trainer for 1984 WBA World Champion, Greg Page I know a little about the sweet science of boxing and honestly I think of the old addage..."as if to manner born" when I think of professional fighters. A true champion is made long before he enters the ring; they possess an inate quality that makes them excel in one of the most brutal and physically demanding sports called boxing!
