Growing your own sugar snap peas
Buy your seeds now!
How to start your peas inside
If you start before the last frost:Get yourself some Sugar Snap Pea seeds (I like Super Snap II), soil and Jiffy pots. Plant according to directions (1 seed per pot) and keep soil moist, but not wet. Watch peas pop up in a few days and start taking over the house.
Harden off the peas (get them used to being outside) by setting them outside for an hour each day for a couple days and gradually increasing the hours outside over a couple weeks.
Transplant outside after the last frost, taking care to water well for the first week.
Planting directly outside
Plant your seed right into the ground according to package directions. Keep moist but not soaked. Don't let the soil get dry.
Caring for your peas
Note that peas do not need nitrogen and will burn if fertilized with anything containing much...don't even mulch. That goes for organic fertilizers, grass, hay, etc.Build a trellis as I posted about here for your peas.
Harvest and freezing
Peas can be frozen by blanching for 2 minutes, patting dry then placing in freezer bags.
Enjoy!
