Help For When You're Thinking of Suicide

Why do Some People Want to Die?

Is there a life after this one? Many of us believe there is, and that death does not end our spirit, but only the body it resides in while here on this ole' planet earth. Most of the time we can find things to occupy our minds and find happiness in being alive, especially if we have family members to share it all with. Our pets can keep us company, but when they die, depression can set in and be so unbearable to cope with. Especially when you feel they were the only ones who really cared. I met a man on MySpace who lost his beloved dog and nearly wanted to die with her. I know what that is like. Check out my lens on Do Animals Go To Heaven. Be sure to read my favorite little story there called, "Best friend". A memorial photo to my precious Tobie (Old English Sheepdog) is there. When you feel so very alone inside that you just want to be able to sleep for a very long time, it's hard to focus on getting anything done. People may try to help, but in the end, when you're again alone with your thoughts, where do you turn when all your life you believed in a God that would be there if only you followed Him. He just doesn't answer, when the pain is so deep that you feel lost in a world of seemingly increasing greed and hateful, selfishness. When you sit down and think of all that you have gone through in your life and the good you have tried to do, goes unnoticed- why bother anymore. When you raise the children you love and would give your life for, what next, after they are taught to be alienated from you? I search for TRUTH, as it is supposed to set you free, right? But, while I long for truth, those I trusted in most, lie to me, and even worse, about me. Mom and Dad are long gone now, but I remain grateful for their teaching me the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They say suicide hurts those you leave behind, but what if the only one who cared is already gone on to the other side? And where is the other side, anyways? Is it still here in a different dimension? We all know the holiday season is a time of depression for many, as it brings back good memories of days gone never to be had again. Sometimes suicide is thought of because it's lonely and no one really cares. Sometimes you don't have money to take care of your family's needs, and people you know who could help just don't care, and others who would help, just don't know about it. Sometimes you are in a lot of physical pain. Sometimes it's just all of the above. But, I think, too that it is thought of because you have love to give and no one wants it. Bake, sew a gift, give your time and your all, and it all goes unnoticed. Would they notice after you're gone that the clothes were always washed, the food was there, the dishes were clean, the songs were sung, the gifts they wanted were bought (through much struggling to save), the lessons were taught (though unheeded), the little things were all done and left available for all to use, but taken for granted. Does a depressed person only drink water to replace the tears that just don't stop? Do depressed people listen to sad songs or watch sad movies, because misery loves company? Does the hurt on the inside manifest itself in the hurtful bodily diseases that man looks to find the answers for? Maybe the answer is yes! Maybe love IS all we need, like the Beatles said. Imagine.

Is Blood Thicker Than Water?

Ever heard that blood is thicker than water? I disagree! I know it means your own flesh and blood family stick by you more than people outside the family. But do they really? How many of you know of people (friends or sometimes even strangers) who treat you better than your own family? I'll bet there are a lot! Haven't you ever read in the newspapers how a total stranger (maybe an angel unaware?), will donate a kidney or other organ to someone in need, but a family member can't (or won't) give you the time of day? I believe what I call Karma, and what goes around will come around one day when least expected. One day I had a dream where Jesus told me it will be alright in the end. And the TRUTH will make you free!

Review
In a book both personal and scientific, Thomas Joiner gives us the deepest understanding of suicide that has yet been written. He reminds us that to go on living we need to feel that we belong to someone and that we are effective. But he adds a surprising third factor--we must not break down our fear of death. Joiner offers wise guidance not only to professionals, but to those who must live on after this kind of death in the family.

Honest, gentle advice for those who have survived an unspeakable loss-the suicide of a loved one.

Transforming suffering into strength, misconceptions into understanding, and shame into dignity, Beverly Cobain and Jean Larch break through the dangerous silence and stigma surrounding suicide to bring readers this much-needed book. Cobain's achingly honest account of dealing with the suicide of a loved one, along with personal stories from others who experienced this profound loss, provide powerful insight into the confusion, fear, and guilt family members experience. A chapter about "the suicidal mind" helps families not only comprehend the depth of their loved one's pain prior to suicide, but also understand why such desperation is so difficult to recognize-even in the closest relationships. By sharing survivor stories as well as the latest thinking and statistics about suicide, Cobain and Larch break through myths, misinformation, and misunderstandings. The result is a book of extraordinary compassion and steadfast guidance for anyone awash in the aftermath of unfathomable loss.

A great many books have been written on the reasons for suicide from the victim's point of view, but this powerful work deals with the wrenching emotional effects of unexpected purposeful death on grieving survivors. The author's husband, seemingly a thriving physician, took his life in December 1989. Fine's discovery of his body left her with a flood of mixed emotions and anguish that inspired her to record, in vividly honest terms, the legacy of suicide on survivors. Despite the permanent sadness and even humiliation that suicide survivors face, this book offers hope in its summary of predictable patterns of adjustment. Sections move from the suicide, to its aftermath, to survival and how to make sense of the chaos. An excellent appendix includes current information on organizations, resource materials, and support groups for suicide survivors. The bibliography is extensive and useful.

From Publishers Weekly
This guide for suicide survivors family and friends of people who took their own lives maintains InterVarsity Press's tradition of cerebral evangelicalism: it is biblical, well reasoned, clearly presented and thoroughly researched. Such a head-over-heart presentation is not surprising, since the author is an IVP editor. An unexpected bonus is the personal thread Hsu weaves through each chapter, the story of his own deep grief at his father's sudden suicide four years ago. In the book's first section, Hsu explores the emotions of grief from sudden shock to eventual remembrance. Though his map of grieving differs from the familiar one proposed by Elisabeth K bler-Ross, Hsu never minimizes grief's importance. "Only when we actively mourn will we be able to receive the comfort that God and others offer," he writes. Nevertheless, "those without [Christian] hope grieve in one way; those with hope grieve in another." The Christian way of grieving is Hsu's focus in the latter half of the book, where he surveys Scripture to deal with questions such as whether people who die by suicide can go to heaven, where God is when tragedy strikes and what can be learned from suicide. With its careful biblical exposition presented in a friendly homiletic style, Hsu's how-to-think-about-suicide book will have value for evangelical pastors and counselors as much as perhaps even more than for the bereaved themselves.

Amazon.com Review
"Suicide is a particularly awful way to die: the mental suffering leading up to it is usually prolonged, intense, and unpalliated," writes Kay Redfield Jamison. "There is no morphine equivalent to ease the acute pain, and death not uncommonly is violent and grisly." Jamison has studied manic-depressive illness and suicide both professionally--and personally. She first planned her own suicide at 17; she attempted to carry it out at 28. Now professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, she explores the complex psychology of suicide, especially in people younger than 40: why it occurs, why it is one of our most significant health problems, and how it can be prevented. Jamison discusses manic-depression, suicide in different cultures and eras, suicide notes (they "promise more than they deliver"), methods, preventive treatments, and the devastating effects on loved ones. She explores what type of person commits suicide, and why, and when. She illustrates her points with detailed anecdotes about people who have attempted or committed suicide, some famous, some ordinary, many of them young. Not easy reading, either in subject or style, but you'll understand suicide better and be jolted by the intensity of depression that drives young people to it.

Almost all of us are touched at some point in our lives by suicide, whether it's the suicide or attempted suicide of someone we know, our own passing thoughts of suicide, or a heartfelt plea from a terminally ill loved one who wishes for a swift and painless end to life. No matter what the circumstances, those of us who are affected are left with difficult and disturbing questions. Why did they do it? Is there anything I could of done to prevent it? What should I tell people when they ask what happened? Is someone who attempts suicide likely to try it again? What should I do if I'm thinking of committing suicide? Can I get in trouble if I help a terminally ill loved one die? Without moral judgment, Why Suicide? offers lucid, thoughtful, and comprehensive answers to hundreds of questions about this complex and painful issue. Eric Marcus cuts through the veil of silence, examining the facts and figures and myths and rumors, shedding much-needed light on all aspects of suicide.

The U.S. purportedly has at least 80 suicides per day, with many times that number in failed attempts. Life staffer Colt attributes the alarming rise in adolescent suicides to multiple factors including drugs, loneliness, divorce, rootlessness, increased competition and the threat of global suicide hanging over us all. The most comprehensive, illuminating look at suicide to date, this monumental survey begins with an account of "suicide clusters" that shook Plano, Texas in 1983 and a tri-county area around New York City in 1984. Poignant case histories underscore the fact that "even to trained suicidologists, clues are often recognizable only in retrospect." Surveying the history of suicide from ancient Egypt to U.S. inner cities, Colt demonstrates that the way a culture judges suicide depends largely on that culture's view of death. After discussing the moral and legal issues raised by right-to-die advocates, he explores contemporary suicide prevention, including treatment centers, hot lines, survivor groups and unprecedented classroom efforts to educate students about suicide.
