Suikoden series of games

The Suikoden series of games are released by Konami. Originally on the Playstation they have continued onto the PS2 and now the DS.

All the games revolve around the 27 True Runes and the 108 stars of destiny. The True Runes were responsible for creating the world and grant the bearer great power and immortality, while the 108 stars of destiny are a group of heroes who when assembled can accomplish anything. The result are political and strategy RPG games on an epic scale.

As well as the original RPGs, the epic nature of the games let the series adapt into strategy games and handhelds as well. The original Playstation RPGs are considered to be among the best console RPGs ever written.

About Suikoden

Konami's Playstation RPG

Possibly the best RPG ever released, when General Teo McDohl's son discovers the empire his father serves is corrupt political factions begin work to bring him down. To destroy the corruption at the heart of the empire, the hero must find the 108 Stars of Destiny and assemble an army to meet the challenge head on.

Suikoden II

Konami's second Suikoden Playstation RPG

A rare direct sequel. On the other side of the continent, Prince Luca Blight commits a heartstopping act of betrayal against his own people to justify a war. The two young survivors find themselves hunted by both sides, and seperated. The hero takes up lodgings in a deserted castle and assembles the 108 Stars of Destiny to help him defeat the tyrant.

This is a direct sequel, and if you have save data from Suikoden it can be loaded in so characters continue from the level they reached in the last game.

Suikoden III

Suikoden on the PS2

This was an early entry on the PS2. Featuring a rare three storyline plot where there were no true villains only antagonists (since you saw the story from everyone's point of view), the game's graphics have dated poorly. When a war begins between two kingdoms, who has manipulated events to create it, and why? People from all the kingdoms begin to suspect there is more going on than it first appears and have to band together to stop what is going on.

It was only released in Japan and America, which caused issues for Suikoden fans in the UK since once again the saves from the previous games unlocked extra content that explained the story further.

Suikoden IV

Suikoden goes to sea.

"What Suikoden IV? Didn't they jump straight from 3 to 5?"
-A disgruntled fan

The sentiment above is not an unusual one among fans of the series, unfortunately. Suikoden IV is full of great ideas, but flawed in execution. For example, one of the ways Suikoden IV tried to make itself epic was a huge world map. Unfortunately this means it takes you so long to get anywhere (and you are moving so verrrryyy slowly) that players can doze off while trying to get to the next bit of plot. The "open-ended" game world translates into a lot of non-standard game overs. It really is one for the completists. I restarted this game twice, and it takes a lot to make me quit an RPG.

A set of small islands find themselves under attack when internal strife boils over. The hero, who has accidentally gained the True Rune of Punishment (which always kills itas bearer) puts to sea in a large vessel to try to collect the 108 Stars of Destiny.

The original 108 stars

The Japanese myth of Suikoden

The Suikoden Series is based on an old Japanese myth about 108 honorable bandits, and another Chinese version about 108 demons who repented their sins and were reborn as earthly heroes. The legend states that united the 108 Stars (or the people who represent them) can do great things. The hero of the series was depicted in many woodcuts, and some examples are available from Zazzle.

I was just coming through and seen the page. Man you did a great job on the page and the reviews and I am happy to announce I am a huge fan of some of the suik games and that I have the nds game. Other then the pushing speed of the main characters voice for the ingame voice portion of the game, it is an amazing pick for any suik lover and or for any new rpg fan. check it out, you will enjoy.
