"Visionary Extraordinaire"

The discovery of some postcards with the images of Sulamith Wulfing in a small bookshop in Glendale, California, in the early 1970's started a quest to find out more about this person.

At first I did not know if she was a man or woman (no google or squidoo back then.)

Finally a friend of mine gave me a book, called The Fantastic Art of Sulamith Wulfing, and I began to learn just a little bit more about her. She was still alive then.

By that time I had a card collection about about 75 images. I still do.

Biography of Sulamith...

Internationally acclaimed artist Sulamith Wulfing was born in 1901 in Wuppertal-Elberfeld, Germany, into a very spiritual German family (her father was a Theosophist) and "her earliest memories include seeing the angels, 'gnomes' and small, delicate creatures which have always populated her drawings." She had her first exhibition of paintings there in 1923. During WWII, she was forced to flee the Nazis with her son and mother, and the family experienced a number of tragic events before they were reunited at Christmas 1945. (She was convinced that only the spiritual support of her teacher, Jiddu Krishnamurti, kept her from the concentration camps.) The years after the war were filled with intense artistic activity and publishing. She died in March 1989 at the age of 88.

Painting made in 1962...I wish Sulamith were here to tell us about the symbolism in this beautiful garment. Maybe this image can just serve to inspire each of us to "see" with the invisible eye and make our own visionary art.

This is the book my friend gave to me over 30 years ago. I still treasure it.

Still available for under $20 as a used book...

Thank you so much for the blessing...and for the tip about the jumping photo galleries. I hope I have fixed the problem.

What a lovely lens. I love the artwork. There is something very light and airy about some of the images.
