How Sri-Lanka-Child-Care was born
On Boxing Day 2004 a massive Tsunami hit Sri-Lanka. The east, south and south-west coasts were completely devastated. Children lost parents and parents lost children in every single coastall village. In a matter of minutes the roll of surviving parents in Sri-Lanka changed from striveing to bring up their children in the accepted cultural manner of their particular village to fighting for survival in a world turned upside down by the loss of life, property, income and dignity.
On New Years Eve my wife and I flew out to Sri-Lanka with two sacks of used clothing and some cash, donated by our family, friends and Ex Royal Air Force association colleagues to do what ever we could to alleviate this desperate situation. As soon as possible after our arrival in Sri-Lanka we made our way down the south-west coast until we arrived at a small town called Patuwatha. There we made contact with three small tented refugee camps that had no facilities at all. We decided that this area was where we could best put our limited resources to work. The used clothing was distributed among the three camps and new underwear was given to all the children. We provided primitive cooking stoves and utensils so that the refugees could cook their own basic meals. We built toilets at all three camps and built two day centers to act as focal points for of the camps.
It soon became obvious that these basic facilities we had provided were only a very small step on a very long road to recovery for most of these children. A lot of them had lost fathers, brothers, sisters and other members of their extended families. With no income they would not be able to return to school and would be reduced to begging or working hard in sweat shops to earn a few rupees to help the family survive. We decided there and then that we would help as many of these children as we possibly could to return to school and continue their education. We returned from Sri-Lanka with the specific intention of forming a charity. This is how Sri-Lanka-Child-Care was born.

Sumaga Farm
Sumaga Farm turned out to be a fantastic social community project. It all started as a small vocational school to teach life skills to young women from deprived village backgrounds. They are offered a six-month residential course and are taught useful skills, which include sewing, health and hygiene, cooking, animal husbandry and organic gardening. They are taught to look after chickens, pigs and goats and the manure from these animals is used to fertilize all the fruit and vegetables that they learn to grow. Some of the meat, eggs, fruit and vegetables that they produce are sold in the farm shop to the local people and some are used to help feed the students.
In response to the Tsunami, they have recently started a day care center for 200 deprived children aged from 3 ½ to 11. The children come in the morning at 7.30 and are given breakfast, lunch and a snack before leaving at 4.00 pm and of course they receive an education including English. They all have uniforms made by the life skills students in their sewing lessons and some of their food is provided by the student's efforts on the farm. After our tour of the farm, vocational school and day care center we went back to Mrs. Corteling's office and told her what a fantastic project we thought she was running. Then she gave us the bad news, Sumaga Farm was running out of funds and unless they could find another source of income they would have to close the whole project down within the next few months. Our immediate reaction was to say that this must never be allowed to happen and that we would support them as much as we possibly could.
On our return to the UK I began to reserch organic gardening and soon came across The Food For Everyone Foundation.I was so impressed by the Mittleider Method that I decided that our next target would be to introduce this method to Sri-Lanka through Sumaga Farm.To learn more about the Mittleider Method Click Here!
