What does this Angel on Squidoo look for in my Summer Fun lens?

Here's what I look for in a lens before sprinkling some angel dust on it

Although as an Angel on Squidoo, I'm known for being quite picky, I don't think I'm too exigent when it comes to things I like to see in a lens prior to sprinkle some angel dust on a it. Here are a few of the qualities I look for in a lens when I'm on my angeling duties - and even when I'm not.

  • I always look at a lens layout. Properly format your texts, it's really important to make the reading of your lens easier. Reading online is much more tiring than reading a paper book. Try to make short paragraphs, break down your long texts into shorter ones and place them in different modules; this will also help search engine generation since you'll use more H1 tags than with less modules.

  • Properly credit quotes and texts you took from someone else, otherwise I might consider it plagiarism and report your lens without warning, more particularly if I spotted such practice in different lenses of yours.

  • Although I'm not an English speaker native, I pay attention to grammar and spelling, however, I won't penalize you in all cases.

Well, the list isn't over yet... So scroll down to the next chapter and see the next batch of best Squidoo practices.

I love nothing as much as a Squidoo lens that's beautifully illustrated. In the same vein, I enjoy getting some tips and ideas on how to use the products you feature on your lens. Here are a few ideas for you to exploit when making a lens:

  • When you build a sales lens, try as much as possible to write a short description of your own for each product. This means that, if I come to a lens that doesn't include more than a 200 character intro and is filled with 20 Amazon modules or just product pictures and nothing else but a link to buy them, I'll run away.

  • In the same vein, I won't like a lens filled with copied/pasted Amazon description in your Amazon modules or featured products, this doesn't show your work, it just shows me how you're able to copy others' work. Indeed, I like to leave a blessing on personal work.

  • I love recipe lenses, however I often visit recipe lenses with too small or no pictures at all, lack of directions after the ingredients and/or simple link to the original recipe. This also makes me run away from a lens. Instead, when you make a recipe lens, add big pictures of the dish even if they aren't yours, write the directions to prepare the recipe with your own words. This will make me love the lens and more likely sprinkle some angel dust on it.

  • When you build a recipe lens, don't just add a bunch of links to recipe pages on the Web, if I searched for recipes on Squidoo I want to find those recipes on Squidoo - more particularly on the page I landed; I just do NOT want to be brought to another site.

  • Although I'm often tempted to do this myself and remove most of these before publishing a lens, I would ask you to narrow your lenses or stay in the topic you chose. For example, if you build a lens about Easter decorations, don't feature party supplies, costumes, party favors and other unrelated products. This just makes the lens look like junk and untargeted, more particularly because the reader landed to your lens for having searched for decorating items only.

Most points listed above can apply to any kind of lenses, whether recipes, crafts, etc. I just don't consider Squidoo as a search engine, if I want to run a search for the best sites for a topic, I'll do my search on Google, Yahoo!, Bing or any other search engine. The next chapter will cover the basic Squidoo practices.

Here's another batch of things I look for before I bless a lens:

  • Make sure you build lenses on authorized topics - check out Squidon't if you're unsure of the type of lenses you're allowed to build. Failing to abide by this rule may have your lens reported to HQ who are able to lock it.

  • Edit and customize all your module titles (and subtitles if you want) in order to make me know that you consider your lenses and Squidoo endeavors as serious.

  • Always fill in your lens bio and photo so that I know that I'm visiting the lens of a real lensmaster and not someone who doesn't care about their visitors.

  • Although this is not required, I like to add a comment to your guestbook and often see outstanding lenses without a guestbook. Don't worry, I'll probably silently bless your lens, however I might also silently tell it to others.

Although the list may look long, you'll quickly see that most of the time, you have built a lens that meets my requirements. So, go on, build a new Squidoo lens and cross your fingers as this Angel on Squidoo might come and bless it.
