olympic cycling

  • Many British kings and queens, such as Queen Victoria and Henry VIII, have supported the sport of archery. The latter staged contests and founded the first Archery club - the Brotherhood of St. George - in 1537.
  • Swimming has been on the Olympic Games programme since the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. At the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, swimming competitions took place in the yachting marina at Zea (Piraeus). The swimmers got on a boat, and having reached the chilly waters of the Saronic Gulf, they leapt into the sea, swimming towards the finishing line at the Marina Zeas' shore.
  • The sport of boxing was never intrinsically linked with aggressive attack and heavy hitting. Since ancient times people "did not consider beating and quarelling to be evidence of bravery". To the contrary, the aim of the 'un-injured' (atravmatistos) athlete in ancient Greece was the constant defense and the avoidance of blows, until his opponent was exhausted in attack and was led to 'apagorefsi', namely surrender by raising either one or two fingers, a sign that he acknowledged his defeat. A boxer called Melagomas from Karia in Asia Minor was famous in ancient times for this 'un-injured' style of boxing. He was able to avoid his opponents' blows and defend himself for two days, until his opponents conceded defeat.

  • Men's Shooting was one of the nine sports on the programme of the first Olympic Games of modern times in Athens in 1896.

olympic rowing

  • The first bicycle was built in 1790 by a French aristocrat, Count Sivrac. The original two cycling disciplines - Road race and Track cycling - were included in the first Olympic Games of modern times in Athens in 1896. A Greek athlete, Aristides Konstantinidis, was crowned gold Olympic winner on March 31, 1896 for the 87km endurance road race, which started from Athens, went out to Marathon and ended at Faliro.
  • Although archery was a way of life for hunting and war, later in history, archery began to spread purely as a sport of leisure. The first recorded Archery contest of recent times was in Finsbury, in 1583; where three thousand archers took part. The first international competition was held between English and French archers in 1900, the year that archery was accepted into the Olympic Games, in Paris.
  • The London Swimming Association drew up the first rules of Water polo in 1870. They allowed: sinking opponents; holding the ball underwater; and scoring with the use of both hands. Today's version of the sport is based on a set of rules introduced in Scotland in 1880, which made important changes in the way Water polo was played. There were seven players on each team, and the dimensions of the goal were fixed. The changes made Water polo more popular and within a short time it had won over many fans, mostly in the countries of the former British Empire.
