Summer Reading That Isn't Boring
I meet a lot of children who don't like reading, and whenever I do I ask them to read a book of my choosing and then see if they don't like to read. More often than not, they love the book and want to know of another one to read. I just give them the list of my top five books.
My Top Five Books
1. Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
I'm not the only person in love with this book. It's really interesting because it doesn't really have a strong plot, there are no twists or anything. It's just a story about an troubled teenager, who guides you through his funny and troublesome thoughts, but yet you get buried in the book unable to come out of it. I read it in almost one sitting.
2. The Lives of Christopher Chant by Diana Wynne Jones
I'm not a big fantasy fan, but I can't get enough of the books that Diana turns out. This is my favorite one by her, but all of her books take you through a wonderful, well thought out plot that keeps you entertained (never tired) throughout through the whole book. Not only is her plot well though out, but her writing style is wonderful. I would recommend buying Volume 1 in "The Chronicles of Chrestomanci" because you get "The Lives of Christopher Chant" along with "Charmed Life" another wonderful book by Diana Wynne Jones.
3. The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
I found this book in Powell's while I was visiting in Portland. I couldn't put it down. This book is freaky, and it's written in the style for young adults, which just makes it more intriguing. It really isn't what you'd expect to find in the young adult section. If you like to be a little spooked by your books, and like a happy ending read this.
4. The Warriors Series by Erin Hunter
Okay this actually a whole series about warrior cats who fight to protect their land. It sound really horribly dorky, but it's really, really good. There is actually a new series for each generation of cats.
5. 'Sang Spell by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and Jana Duda
Good book. The kids mom dies, he's left with no body, and is supposed to go to live with his aunt. Instead he decides to give on his own adventure. You don't really know what's going on in the book until the end, or who's the bad guy. This is a short wonderful read.
