What To Do On Your Summer Staycation

What Is a "Staycation"?
A "Staycation" is a unique kind of vacation where you stay at home instead of going away. So how can a staycation be a vacation if it is spent at home?
The idea behind a staycation is that you take time away from your everyday life, without actually having to travel away.
Staycations are a great solution if you want a vacation, but are short on cash, time, or simply hate the idea of travel delays.
Staycationers may decide to stay at home, or may even check into a local hotel. Either way, you save on the cost of airline tickets and fuel.
By cutting out the transportation costs, you can save hundreds dollars, time, and frustration.
If you are short of time you can check into a local hotel or resort. Between ordering room service and taking advantage of hotel spa treatments, to lounging by the pool, local hotels or resorts can be a great way to get away with out going very far.
If you are short of money, you can get creative. See my other lenses on creative staycationing.
Really, what makes a vacation so fun is the difference in activities and daily schedules, time alone with loved ones, and a general feeling that one has been extracted from their everyday routine.
Recreate that and Poof! Instant Staycation!

Modern Vacation History
In the late 1940s, about half of Americans owned cars. By 1960, car ownership was 73 percent. Labor unions had negotiated two weeks off with pay for millions of workers, and by the end of the decade much of the interstate highway system had been completed.Families would pile into the family car for long road trips, visiting national monuments and parks. In 1960, the average cost of a gallon of regular grade gasoline was 31 cents, the equivalent of $2.25 today.

First Step In Home Area Vacation Planning
First and foremost, specific times and dates should be allotted for the local vacation just as though it were being spent away.
To prevent neighbors and friends from interrupting your "vacation", phones can be turned to mute, and the welcome mat can be replaced with a "we're on vacation" sign.
Generally, it's a great idea to avoid the activities that are typical to ones everyday life, and replace them with the activities usually done on vacations.
Activities usually done on vacation can be done on a local vaation. These include board games, reading books, taking vacation photos, and watching movies with fellow staycationers.
Alarms can be turned off, unless they are being set so that the staycationers can wake up in time for something fun. Chores should be avoided at all costs.
It may be tempting to revert to the activities performed in everyday life. Making a list can help keep staycationers focused on fun.
Rather than a "to do" list, staycationers can think up a "could do" list filled with ideas for fun activities.
In addition, it might be helpful to make a "don't do" list of all the activities that staycationers should avoid in order to make their staycation feel more authentic.
A "don't do" list might include tasks that cannot be done on a away vacation, such as responding to emails, catching up on paper filing, organizing the linen closet, and other tasks that just don't say "staycation."

Staycation News
- Deals Designed To Hook TAMPA Tourists
- TAMPA - "Staycation." It's become the summer buzzword reflecting vacationers' inclination to stay close to home as gas prices soar and the economy sags.
In response, hundreds of Florida hotels, restaurants and attractions are offering discounts well ahead of the normally slow autumn travel season. - "Staycations"! Save the gas, stay & vacation in your own neck of the woods!
- If you really put your mind to it, have you really thought about just how much fun "staycations" can be?
One year my son and I went all summer long with seeing how many things that we could do in our own backyard/city, that was either free or well, at least in our own city instead of traveling out of town. It was amazingly fun! We could'nt even get to all the fun that we wanted to! There were just so many intersting things to do! You've just got to focus and do a little searching on the net, etc., to find great things to do! Yes, seriously, you don't have to travel far to find fun things to do in your own "neck of the woods"! - Dad to Dad
- I was explaining to my son how my purchase of a motor scooter to travel the five miles to and from the office each day was going to save big money on gas. My son, always an excellent math student, added it up in his head and said, "Dad, you're paying $2,000 for a scooter getting 100 MPG. At a gas cost of $5 per gallon over the next year, and assuming you'll not drive your Jeep getting 15 MPG, then you'll be saving about $150 based on the 500 miles you'll drive during the five months the weather is good."
Just $150? I couldn't believe it. It'll take more than 13 years just to offset the cost of the scooter. Maybe giving up the comfort of my air-conditioned ride to work wasn't a great idea after all.
We're all looking for ways to beat the gas crunch. Finally, Americans are cutting back on driving and turning in their SUV's for gas-saving hybrids. For many, a reduction in driving will mean an elimination of the traditional vacation. The staycation is now all the rage.
Taking a Mini Vacation
Although everyone would prefer to take 2 week vacations, sometimes this isn't always feasable. If you don't have a lot of vacation built up at work, it might not even be an option.
Are you low on time and cash?
This is where a nice short vacation can fit the bill. Just a day or two away from the daily grind.
Travel agencies and hotels recognize this need and have designed special packages for those mini vacations that so many of us want and need.
You can still take the family, just don't stay so long. The following packages are hot deals for only a few days. Make memories and use the remainder of your planned vacation money on home entertainment that will last all year long.
Mini Las Vegas Vacation
What better way to get away from it all in the fantasy land for adults!
Mini Washington D.C. Vacation
The vacation your family will remember for a lifetime - the Smithsonian, the Capitol.. a history lesson in a few days.
Mini-Vacation to Orlando
Disneyworld is still within reach - just don't stay so long!
Important Part of A Staycation - Dining Out
When you are on an extended vacation, do you cook?NO.
Nor should you on a staycation.
When planning your staycation, don't forget to dine out. To get the vacation "feel" it's important not to eat at a restaurant that you've been to before. In keeping with the frugality of staycationing,
discover new places to eat that are not expensive. Find sidewalk cafe's, cafeteria's (IKEA's has a great one) and coffee shops.
Have the deli pack a picnic lunch.
Stop at your town's tourist traps.
If you must cook, stay with your staycation theme. If you have a France staycation theme - only authentic french food. Italy staycation...you get the idea.
The Theme Staycation
To make your staycation more fun and interesting why not give it a theme? If you are staying home, but really wanted to go to France, why not have a French staycation. Speak French only. Eat only French foods. Rent French foreign films.
You can have a tropical theme. A western theme. A history theme. You imagination is your only limit. You can check out my other lenses on themed staycations for ideas.
Don't Forget The Camera
Photos are the means to remember our vacations. Just because we are staying at home, or near home, doesn't mean we're not making wonderful memories.Take photos of your staycation. Stand in front of statues, have strangers take your photo, take pictures of yourself, your family, your food, and your surroundings.
Make sure you take at least 10 photos a day - or video! You will need these to show your friends what an amazing time you had on your staycation!
