When Did They First Start Making Sun Tea?
Sun Tea can be made any time of year in Southern California, the Islands and warmer southern States. During cold months and in colder climates, a sun room or warm window sill might do the trick.
I'm not sure I know when the first brew of sun tea was made, but I know I started making it in the 1970's. Each year I purchased a new Sun Tea Jar because I'm notorious for breaking glass...but it allowed us to enjoy another pretty jar at the start of a new spring and summer season. There was a good feeling putting those tea bags into water, and setting the jar out in the warm sunshine where it was brewing naturally, while my kitchen stayed cool and dry because there was no need to turn on the burner to warm water, and no boiling water to steam up the kitchen.
Here you'll find information about sun tea, how to make sun tea, and hopefully one or two things you haven't thought of trying before if you have already been making sun tea.

Vintage and New Sun Tea Jars
What a nice selection!
I can't promise there will always be vintage sun tea jars here, but you will definitely find a nice selection! Vintage jars appear now and then, and all items are available for a limited time.
How to Make Sun Tea
It's Easy!
Here's all I do, and some videos below so you can see how some other folks make the tea.
You'll need:
1. A Jar - any jar will do, and any size will, too, but most prefer large size Sun Tea jars that hold approximately a gallon
2. Tea - your favorite tea bags, any flavor, or for fun, combine flavors
3. Water
4. The warm glow of sun smiling down on your jar
Very Simple Instructions:
1. Fill the jar with water
2. Add Tea bags so tags are hanging over side, but bags are fully immersed in water, for a nice strong tea, about 5 bags for a gallon sun tea jar, remember ice will dilute your tea...I like mine strong.
3. Cover the jar, the lid will go over the strings of the teabags and hold them in place
4. Place the jar in a warm sunny spot that will receive direct sunlight for a few hours. I let the color of the tea determine whether it is "done" or not, and the time varies depending upon how hot it is, but generally an hour will do.
Option 1 - If you are adding mint leaves or other herbs when brewing with tea bags, clean them well, gently roll between your hands to release the oils that provide the flavor, and add to the water before adding the tea bags.
Option 2 - If you are not using tea bags, but using fresh herbs to make your tea, it may take a few hours. Give the bottle a gentle shake every hour or so.
Now, enjoy a few videos on making Sun Tea while you wait for your tea to finish brewing or while you enjoy a glass of freshly brewed iced tea...maybe you'll discover new ideas for your next batch.
Herbs to Add to Your Brewing Tea
You can vote your favorite to the top

Tetley or Lipton, Which Do You Prefer?
Neither? Pick a side and tell us why
You'll know which tea I prefer when you look below, but what about you? Do you like Tetley Tea or Lipton?
If neither will do for you, then let us know on either side what your favorite tea is.
Just start typing in the blank field below, and the options will appear.
Tetley, Lipton or Neither?

I'll take Lipton over Tetley any day
PastorCher says:
Decaf Lipton
ForestBear says:
Lipton for me
Desilegend says:
I'll prefer Lipton from this selection.
sandyspider says:
I was raised on Lipton!
lizziebeth says:
I like Lipton just because I am more used to it and the taste is familiar.
IntuitiveHealer says:
Well, I've enjoyed Luzianne in the past, but now, I mostly use loose tea or herbal tea bags. If I had to choose, I think it would be Lipton.
My favorite tea is Tetley
24websurf says:
I love them both, I just happen to have Tetley in my hand at the moment.
noobeegin says:
Tetley, hands down!
miaponzo says:
I think Tetley is my FAVE :) although both are nice, and there are other good ones, too... boy, here in Kuwait they love tea (hot of course), and we have millions of strange brands!
bygproductions says:
I'm not a fan of Lipton although that's what I grew up with, it's too bitter. I'd choose Tetley's over Lipton any day. I also like Bigelow, Benchleys and many others.
Susan52 says:
We use Luzianne tea bags for iced tea.
Lipton Tea for Me
It's a matter of personal taste
With so many teas available, why would I pick Lipton? All I can say is that it's a matter of personal taste. There are MANY teas available, not only this "regular" tea, and the Green Tea below, but click through and search for tea bags, you'll be amazed!
Lipton Green Tea
A healthy brew, have a cup daily!
Again, it doesn't have to be Lipton, and it doesn't have to be in bags, there are loose teas available too if you click through and search for them, it's just easier to make sun tea with tea bags.
Lipton Tea Bags, Green Tea Cup Size 100-Count, 7-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 2)
Amazon Price: $24.00 (as of 06/03/2012)![]()
Usually ships in 1-2 business days
Mint for Your Tea - Garden Kit
A favorite addition to our tea
I have mint growing prolifically in my garden, and love to take a stem of leaves, give it a good rinsing to rid it of the little bugs that like to hide under each leaf, then roll the leaves between my hands gently to release the flavors, then add to my sun tea jar when I've prepared it to brew in the sun just before adding the tea bags.
Blooms in a Bag Mint Garden Kit
Amazon Price: $16.99 (as of 06/03/2012)![]()
Usually ships in 1-2 business days
Mesh Tea Ball
To use with your loose teas
This is a neater way to brew your loose teas, just fill with your favorite loose tea leaves or combination of teas and add to your sun tea jar. You may need more than one tea ball to get enough to flavor a large jar of sun tea, this one is larger than some I've seen at 2 1/2" in diameter.
Stainless Steel Tea Ball 2.5-in.
Amazon Price: $0.01 (as of 06/03/2012)![]()
Usually ships in 1-2 business days
Healthy Option 1 - Sweeten With Honey
You will want to add this while the tea is warm or room temperature before adding your ice so that the honey will dissolve properly.
HoneyTree's Organic Rainforest Honey, 16-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 6)
Amazon Price: $26.34 (as of 06/03/2012)![]()
Usually ships in 24 hours
Healthy Option #2 - Sweeten With Stevia
Grow your own!
What better way to sweeten your tea than with a powerfully sweet herb that you can add to the tea during the brewing process. Grow your own with this kit...it can be for your own pleasure, or a delightful project to do with your children.
You'll find Stevia already prepared below.
DuneCraft That Work Stevia
Amazon Price: $11.98 (as of 06/03/2012)![]()
Usually ships in 1-2 business days
Healthy Option #3 - Prepared Stevia
Zero Calories!
Something I didn't mention above is that this natural sweetener from an herb has no calories, and is a much healthier alternative than buying packets of chemically based artificial sweeteners.
SweetLeaf Sweetener (70-Count Packets), 2.5-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 3)
Amazon Price: $15.51 (as of 06/03/2012)![]()

Fruit Infusion Tea Pitcher - Nice for making Sun Tea with Fruit
Delicious and Beautiful
Add the taste of fruit to your sun tea. You can make your sun tea as usual, and then add fruit to the infuser in the center. You can keep the fruit in the infuser and add more tea as needed until the fruit has lost it's flavor. A pretty addition to your summer table, indoors or out. Click the picture above for more information.

- We make sun tea daily. I live in Georgia so iced tea is a daily drink. I am like you in that I have to buy a new jar every year as the spout begins to leak or I have broken the jar. Either way, I also get a matching outdoor tablecloth to go with my new pitcher ;)

- A tablecloth to match! What a great idea. I am sure lots of iced tea is being consumed these days with all the HOT weather throughout the country...esp. in the south and midwest. We had our share here in the northeast too!

- I want to experiment more with sun tea. It definitely works better with some teas and combinations of herbs than others, but I don't have a good sense of which ones are best yet.

- Thanks for your comment. I'd keep it simple and use some green or dark tea with some mint leaves, roll them between your hands to release the oils then add while brewing in the sun or on a warm windowsill if it's winter.
