I'm typing this during the summer when children (and parents) are enjoying one or more of the many lakes in our area, or heading down to the Jersey Shore. No doubt many are coming home with sunburns which can be painful.

So lets take a look at the sun..no, not literally, that's not a good idea :-) Let's not just focus on the negative affect, but also look at some of the health benefits of the sun.

I love the Bible, and it teaches that without the SON of God, Jesus there would be no eternal life...I think of that when I look at the SUN, because without the SUN and a few other things like water, nothing on earth would live.

I hope you enjoy this lens.

Sun May Prevent Some Cancer

Most of the news we hear tells us that the sun causes skin cancer, and this can be true. But there are also health benefits that come from the sun. I spent a bit of time on the topic of the sun on one of my web pages. Here is an excerpt:

"A recent study by researchers at the University of California found that solar ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation can significantly reduce the risk of 16 different types of cancer by naturally stimulating the production of vitamin D in the skin. The study's authors are Cedric F. Garland, Dr.P.H., from the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, and William B. Grant, Ph.D., director of the Sunlight, Nutrition and Health Research Center (SUNARC).

"Enhancing vitamin D status appears to be the single most important simple thing people can do to reduce their risk of cancer, apart from avoiding tobacco and moderation in the intake of alcohol," say Cedric Garland and William Grant.

"It has been frequently reported that those who work outdoors have a reduced risk of developing melanoma [Garland et al., 1990; Kennedy et al., 2004]. The reasons appear to be twofold..." (for the rest of this article, click here).

Contact Healing with Aloe Vera

The Aloe Vera Plant that should be showing in the pictures below is a wonderful plant to have on your kitchen counter in case you burn your finger or hand while cooking. You can also use it to sooth and heal sunburn. Aloe Vera is a contact healer, which obviously means it heals what it comes in contact with.

What you do is take a frond from the plant, slit it open, and squeeze the gel from the plant, then apply to the skin. You can also purchase aloe vera gel for this purpose if you are not able to keep a plant around the house. Please email me at nutritionis[at]happynutritionist.com if you would like a fact sheet about Aloe Vera, the contact healer.

Very informative lens. Just to add on your very useful lens, with the technology today we have a choice not to get ourselves baked under the sun if ever we want to get a tan. Avoiding skin cancer while having a perfect tan is the way to go.

Sunless tanning products, self-tanners, or tanning extenders: These home products are generally available over the counter and can give your skin a tanned look without exposing it to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays and are commonly sold as creams, gels, lotions and sprays you apply to your skin. The active ingredient in most sunless tanning products is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). Sunless tanning products typically go on clear, and you might see results after about an hour. Full color appears within eight to 24 hours. Some products contain a tint, which darkens your skin right away.
