Sun Tanning Safety - is Sun Bathing Safe?
It's summer, the beach is replacing the tanning salon in my part of the country. Is the sun safe? How much sun is too much? How much is too little? What natural remedies can you use if you get a sunburn?
Lets take a look at the sun..no, not literally, that's not a good idea, but you know what I mean:-)
First, let me see how you feel about spending time in the sun, then we'll explore the good and bad of spending time in the sun.

Sun May Cause Other Cancers
Skin being most common
Increased use of tanning beds, and too much time in the sun is considered to be a major cause of the increase in skin cancers. Remember, skin cancer may not develop for many years after you have been burned by the sun.
Lets see what the news has to share about this topic, and learn from the experiences of others.

Sun May Prevent Some Cancer
It can cause it too!
Most of the news we hear tells us that the sun causes skin cancer, and this can be true. But there are also health benefits that come from the sun. I spent a bit of time on the topic of the sun on one of my web pages. Here is an excerpt:
"A recent study by researchers at the University of California found that solar ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation can significantly reduce the risk of 16 different types of cancer by naturally stimulating the production of vitamin D in the skin. The study's authors are Cedric F. Garland, Dr.P.H., from the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, and William B. Grant, Ph.D., director of the Sunlight, Nutrition and Health Research Center (SUNARC).
"Enhancing vitamin D status appears to be the single most important simple thing people can do to reduce their risk of cancer, apart from avoiding tobacco and moderation in the intake of alcohol," say Cedric Garland and William Grant.
"It has been frequently reported that those who work outdoors have a reduced risk of developing melanoma [Garland et al., 1990; Kennedy et al., 2004]. The reasons appear to be twofold..." (for the rest of this article, click here).

What Does Melanoma Look Like?

This is a little chart that I've seen on several sites on the web that gives you some guidelines on what to look for if you think you have Melanoma. Recently I was concerned about a mark on my arm, so went to the Dermatologist, the best thing to do if you are suspicious, and even though it looked suspicious to me, she said it was a common type of skin lesion, and not serious at all.

How To Use Aloe Vera to Heal a Sunburn
Aloe Vera is a Contact Healer
The Aloe Vera Plant, which should be showing in the pictures below, is a wonderful plant to have on your kitchen window sill, or any window that receives some sunlight, in case you burn yourself while cooking, or after too much time in the sun. It contains properties that soothe and heal what they come in contact with on the human body.
What you do is take a frond from the plant, slit it open, and squeeze the gel from the plant, then apply to this to the affected area skin. It may sting a bit when you first apply it, but not always, and in a short time you should notice relief in the area of the burn. Now we're not talking third-degree burns here, those you need to see your doctor about right away, but a surface burn like you get from steam or touching a hot pan while cooking, or from a sunburn.
Aloe Vera Gel available in some stores will also help. Please email me at squidoo[at]happynutritionist.com if you would like a fact sheet about Aloe Vera, the contact healer.
Where to Buy an Aloe Vera Plant
They are EASY to Grow
Pictured is a large aloe vera leaf that has been cut away so that you can view the gel inside.
Click the link for prices and description. Very reasonably priced, and extremely easy to grow...as I may have said, I always have one growing on my kitchen windowsill. Just put in a pot of nice soil, and water as you would any succulent, allowing it to dry between watering.
You can start a new plant from a single front, especially if it has just a little bit of root system on it. Personally, I put them in water to get the roots systems going, then plant them in soil. They'll live in water indefinitely (I know, I've had a piece that is growing new fronds in water for over a year).

- Very informative lens. Just to add on your very useful lens, with the technology today we have a choice not to get ourselves baked under the sun if ever we want to get a tan. Avoiding skin cancer while having a perfect tan is the way to go.
Sunless tanning products, self-tanners, or tanning extenders: These home products are generally available over the counter and can give your skin a tanned look without exposing it to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays and are commonly sold as creams, gels, lotions and sprays you apply to your skin. The active ingredient in most sunless tanning products is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). Sunless tanning products typically go on clear, and you might see results after about an hour. Full color appears within eight to 24 hours. Some products contain a tint, which darkens your skin right away.
