The Sundance Film Festival runs from Jan 19-29 in Park City, Utah.
How to Get Tickets
Plan ahead by purchasing tickets to the first or the second half of the festival. The passes are $2500 but buy you full access to screenings, parties and award shows. This is the Fest's 25th Anniversary, so it will be crowded. Flash that pass, baby. And go for the second half of the Fest-it's way less crowded and chaotic. Contact festival registration.
Plan ahead for individual ticket sales. But you must pre-register before Jan. 5, 2006.
Go for the Adrenaline Pass. It's only $350, ands gets you into all screenings. Here's the catch: Those screening must be to all public screenings 10 a.m. or earlier or 10 p.m. or later. But come on, despite feeling tired, you'll see everything while your friends will be shut out.
Awards Weekend Pass: It's just $200. And you only see movies on the night of Jan. 28 and all day on Sunday, Jan. 29. But you only see the winners in all categories, from dramtic features to documentaries and shorts. Plus you get to go to the awards party and rub shoulders with the stars.
POT LUCK: Not as bad as it sounds. If you just don't have the mindset to plan ahead, you can wait on line at the box-office before each screening and hope for cancellations. They happen more often than anybody thinks. Just have your $10 ready and in you go.
What Theaters to See Them in
- Avoid the Library Centre -- after an hour on those hard chairs your butt will go numb.
- Avoid the Racquet Club screenings, where the lines are long and the chairs just as uncomfortable.
- Make the Eccles Theater your first choice. It's large, commodius and the easiest to penetrate.
- Make the Egyptian Theater a must stop. The seats are old and a bit moldy, but the theater has history and its the place where the Fest started.
- The Holiday Village Cinenas have just been renovated, but the capacity is limited.
Where to Stay
- Park City Marriott
- The Marriot Park City serves as Fest headquarters. The place bustles and if you want to see stars, you'll see them here. It's also located on the free Park City and Fest shuttle route. You don't want to drive between screenings. There is no place to park.
- The Yarrow
- Also on the free shuttle route, and it offers three makeshift screening rooms where the toughest-to-see movies are shown.
- Prospector Square Hotel
- The radiators hiss, creak and groan, and skiers use the place, too, so plan to be awakened early. The place has character.
- Park Avenue Condos
- A bit more private, no bustle, and you must cross the street to the Yarrow to grab the free shuttle.
- Sundance Village
- It has everything: great lodging, fine dine dining, and skiing right outside your door. But the dirty little secret of the Sundance Film Festival is that Sundance is a 45 minute drive from Park City where the Fest is happening.
Where to Eat
- Riverhorse on Main
- The Riverhorse is the classiest restaurant on Main Street. It has terrific food, but forget about it: The studios tie the place with private parties for the length of the Fest.
- Grappa Italian Cafe
- This keeps growing in popularity and is good place for star sightings.
- Shadow Ridge
- For a quick bite before a sceening.
- Zoom
- A restaurant on Main Street owned by Robert Redford. Another plus: He is often there.
- Grub Steak Restaurant
- Park City's best kept secret. Great food, and you can get in -- almost always.
