My Favorite Sunday School Songs
I loved going to Sunday School and especially enjoyed the Sunday School Songs we sang.
I grew up in the small historic town of Pendleton, South Carolina going to the Pendleton Presbyterian Church back in the 1950's and 1960's. Our teacher was Mrs. Frances Martin and she made our class so much fun as well as educational.
I remember the Sword Drills. Mrs. Frances would divide the class into two groups and ask us Bible questions. Most of the questions had to do with the Old Testament stories. She also taught us many songs that I still love to sing today even though I am not blessed with a great singing voice..
These Sunday School Songs bring me such a comforting, safe feeling. I hope we are giving our youth today some songs to hold on to and enjoy for the rest of their lives.
This photo is of my mom and me ready for Sunday School in 1958. The photo below is of Pendleton Presbyterian Church, the church we grew up in.
The lyrics that I have added here are mostly from memory or from my sister's little green book. You might know different lyrics as some of the songs vary. I have posted a great link to a site that list most of the Sunday School Songs and their lyrics. We usually sang these songs with hand motions so if you don't know the motions, just make them up. It makes it more fun! It would also be meaningful to teach the children the sign language for each of the songs.
After my husband and I married, we joined the Pendleton United Methodist Church and I enjoy the Childrens Ministries and their love of music. This page donates a percentage of it's profits to our Childrens Ministries and to Friends of the Park for our Veterans Park in Pendleton SC..

My Sister's Sunday School Song Book
We still enjoy getting together and singing these old Sunday School Songs
My sisters and I often will sing our old Sunday School Songs remembering those days at Pendleton Presbyterian Church. We also have fond memories of visiting the Presbyterian Church in Ware Shoals, SC. Our grandmother and lots and lots of relatives lived there. Our Aunt Polly taught Sunday School and I loved to go to her class. Aunt Polly owned the kindergarden, "Little Red Schoolhouse" in Ware Shoals and was quite a character. I can just hear her singing "Climb, Climb Up Sunshine Mountain".
In 1980, my sister Betty compiled a little book titled "My Sunday School Song Book". I still have my copy and refer to it quite often. Betty made this book before we had personal computers so I imagine it was done on her old Royal Typewriter with carbon copies. Thank you Betty for years of enjoyment of your little book. I have used it when I was teaching Sunday School and refer back to it often now with my grandson.
One of these days I am going to surprise my sisters with a new copy of this book. It is such a joy and getting hard to read. I really need to do that soon.

Jesus Loves Me
This I Know for the Bible tells me so!
Little ones to Him belong, They are weak but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me,
Yes, Jesus loves me, The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me, He who died, Heaven's gates to open wide,
He will wash away my sin, Let His little child come in.
Jesus loves me, loves me still, Though I'm very weak and ill,
From His shining throne on high, Comes to watch me where I lie.
Climb, Climb Up Sunshine Mountain
Heavenly Breezes Blow
Climb, Climb Up Sunshine Mountain
You and I
Heavenly breezes blow.
Climb, climb up sunshine mountain,
Faces all aglow.
Turn, turn from sin and doubting,
Look into the sky.
Climb, climb up sunshine mountain,
You and I.
Praise Him, Praise Him
All Ye Little Children
Praise Him Praise Him
All Ye Little Children, God Is Love, God is Love
All ye little children,
God is love, God is love.
Praise Him, praise Him
All ye little children,
God is love, God is love.
(Serve Him, Love Him)

He's got the whole world in His hands
He's got momma and papa
He's got the whole world in His hands

Zaccheus
was a wee little man
He climbed up in a sycamore tree, for the Lord he wanted to see.
And as the Savior passed him by, He looked up in the tree,
And he said, "Zacchaeus, you come down from there;
For I'm going to your house today, for I'm going to your house today"
Zacchaeus came down from that tree, as happy as he could be,
He gave his money to the poor, and said: "What a better man I'll be."
Be Careful Little Eyes
There's a Father up above, looking down in tender love,
Oh, be careful little eyes, what you see.
There's a Father up above, looking down in tender love,
So be careful little eyes, what you see.
Be careful little ears what you hear
Be careful little mouth what you say...
Be careful little hands, what you touch...
Be careful little feet, where you go...

If You're Happy And You Know It
Clap Your Hands!
If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands,
If you're happy and you know it, then your life will surely show it,
If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands!
If you're happy and you know it, stomp your feet...
If you're happy and you know it, shake your head...
If you're happy and you know it, turn around...
If you're happy and you know it, touch your toes...
I've Got The Joy, Joy, Joy Down In My Heart
down in my heart, (where?), down in my heart,
I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart, (where?) down in my heart to stay.
Chorus:
And I'm so happy, so very happy. I've got the love of Jesus in my heart. And I'm so happy, so very happy. I've got the love of Jesus in my heart
Additional Verses:
I've got the peace that passes understanding down in my heart
I've got the love of Jesus, love of Jesus, down in my heart
I've got the wonderful love of my blessed redeemer way down in the depths of my heart
Go Tell It On The Mountain
Our Jesus Christ is born.
Over the hills and everywhere,
Go tell it on the mountain,
Our Jesus Christ is born.
When I was a seeker I sought both night and day, I asked the Lord to help me, And he showed me the way.
Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and everywhere, Go tell it on the mountain, Our Jesus Christ is born.
He made me a watchman Upon a city wall, And if I am a Christian, I am the least of all.
Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and everywhere, Go tell it on the mountain, Our Jesus Christ is born.
Do Lord
oh do remember me
I've got a home in glory land that outshines the sun (HALLELUJAH!)
I've got a home in glory land that outshines the sun-way beyond the blue
Chrous:
Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me.r> Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me.
Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me-way beyond the blue.
Additional Verse:
I took Jesus as my Savior, You take Him too.
I took Jesus as my Savior, You take Him too.
I took Jesus as my Savior, You take Him too,
Yes He's Calling you.
Sunday School Medley
A Sunbeam, A Sunbeam
A Sunbeam
To shine for Him each day;
In every way try to please Him,
At home, at school, at play.
* Refrain:
A sunbeam, a sunbeam,
Jesus wants me for a sunbeam;
A sunbeam, a sunbeam,
I'll be a sunbeam for Him.
2. Jesus wants me to be loving,
And kind to all I see;
Showing how pleasant and happy,
His little one can be.
3. I will ask Jesus to help me
To keep my heart from sin;
Ever reflecting His goodness,
And always shine for Him.
4. I'll be a sunbeam for Jesus,
I can if I but try;
Serving Him moment by moment,
Then live for Him on high.

Fond memories of my time in Sunday School in Lagos, Nigeria. I did enjoy the songs like "I love Jesus his my friend, he will never leave me his my friend" and I took away a few lessons which is helping me today with my life with Jesus Christ. Most importantly is the peace of the lord that surpasses all understanding.

It's funny how you can forget a lot of things as you grow up but somehow you never forget the words to those Sunday School songs - they still come to mind from time to time.

The music of these songs rings in my head, but it's the their words and the words of loved hymns that are the foundation of my faith. Here are some others ~ Fishers of Men, Thank You Lord for Saving My Soul...,I've Got the Joy Joy Joy Joy Down in My Heart, How Strong and Sweet My Father's Care.
Whisper A Prayer Lyrics
These are the lyrics I found in my sister's book
Whisper a Prayer at Noon
Whisper a Prayer in the Evening
To Keep your heart in tune.
God answers Prayers in the Morning
God answers Prayers at noon
God answers Prayers in the Evening
To keep your heart in tune.
The Wise Man Built His House Upon The Rock
The wise man built his house upon the rock
The wise man built his house upon the rock
The wise man built his house upon the rock
And the rain came tumbling down
Oh, the rain came down
And the floods came up
The rain came down
And the floods came up
The rain came down
And the floods came up
And the wise man's house stood firm.
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
And the rain came tumbling down
Oh, the rain came down
And the floods came up
The rain came down
And the floods came up
The rain came down
And the floods came up
And the foolish man's house went "splat!" [clap hands once]
So, build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ
Build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ
Build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ
And the blessings will come down
Oh, the blessings come down
As your prayers go up
The blessings come down
As your prayers go up
The blessings come down
As your prayer go up
So build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ.
This Little Light of Mine
I'm going to let it shine!
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine
Let it shine,
Let it shine,
Let it shine.
Hide it under a bushel? No!
I'm gonna let it shine
Hide it under a bushel? No!
I'm gonna let it shine
Hide it under a bushel? No!
I'm gonna let it shine
Let it shine,
Let it shine,
Let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine
Let it shine,
Let it shine,
Let it shine.
Don't let Satan blow it out,
I'm gonna let it shine
Don't let Satan blow it out,
I'm gonna let it shine
Don't let Satan blow it out,
I'm gonna let it shine
Let it shine,
Let it shine,
Let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine
Let it shine,
Let it shine,
Let it shine.
Be Careful Little Eyes What You See
Oh, be careful little eyes, what you see.
There's a Father up above, looking down in tender love,
So be careful little eyes, what you see.
Be careful little ears what you hear
Be careful little mouth what you say...
Be careful little hands, what you touch...
Be careful little feet, where you go...
Oh, Who Can Make The Sunshine
I'm Sure I Can't, Can You?
I'm sure I can't, can you?
Oh, who can make the sunshine?
No one but God, it's true!
Oh, who can make a flower?
I'm sure I can't, can you?
Oh, who can make a flower?
No one but God, it's true!
Oh, who can make the raindrops?
I'm sure I can't, can you?
Oh, who can make the raindrops?
No one but God, it's true!
Oh, who can make the wind blow?
I'm sure I can't, can you?
Oh, who can make the wind blow?
No one but God, it's true!

In The Temple
by request
In the temple, in the temple Stood a happy boy one day,
And the doctors wondered greatly at the words they heard Him say.
It was Jesus! It was Jesus! Standing in the temple there.
And the light of heav'n was shining in His face so pure and fair.
It was Jesus who was teaching and they listened to His word,
As He told them of His mission from the great and mighty Lord.
It was Jesus! It was Jesus! Standing in the temple there.
And the light of heav'n was shining in His face so pure and fair.
Let us ever then be eager to sit down at Jesus' feet
To be learning from our Saviour, and His lessons to repeat.
It was Jesus! It was Jesus! Standing in the temple there.
And the light of heav'n was shining in His face so pure and fair.
