My Favorite Sunday School Songs

I grew up in the small historic town of Pendleton South Carolina going to the Pendleton Presbyterian Church back in the 50's and 60's. I loved going to Sunday School and especially enjoyed the songs we sang. Our teacher was Mrs. Frances Martin and she made our class so much fun as well as educational.

I remember the Sword Drills. Mrs. Frances would divide the class into two groups and ask us Bible questions. Most of the questions had to do with the Old Testament stories. She also taught us many songs that I still love to sing today.

These Sunday School Songs bring me such a comforting, safe feeling. I hope we are giving our youth today some songs to hold on to and enjoy for the rest of their lives.

This photo is of my mom and me ready for Sunday School in 1958. The photo below is of Pendleton Presbyterian Church, the church we grew up in.

The lyrics that I have added here are mostly from memory or from my sister's little green book. You might know different lyrics as some of the songs vary. I have posted a great link to a site that list most of the songs and their lyrics. We usually sang these songs with hand motions so if you don't know the motions, just make them up. It makes it more fun! It would also be meaningful to teach the children the sign language for each of the songs.

My Sister's Sunday School Song Book

I have been blessed with a lot of talents but singing was not one of them. This has not prevented me from enjoying music and enjoying singing. It's just that not many people enjoy hearing me.

My sisters and I often will sing our old Sunday School Songs remembering those days at Pendleton Presbyterian Church. We also have fond memories of visiting the Presbyterian Church in Ware Shoals, SC. Our grandmother and lots and lots of relatives lived there. Our Aunt Polly taught Sunday School and I loved to go to her class. Aunt Polly owned the kindergarden, "Little Red Schoolhouse" in Ware Shoals and was quite a character. I can just hear her singing "Climb, Climb Up Sunshine Mountain".

In 1980, my sister Betty compiled a little book titled "My Sunday School Song Book". I still have my copy and refer to it quite often. Betty made this book before we had personal computers so I imagine it was done on her old Royal Typewriter with carbon copies. Thank you Betty for years of enjoyment of your little book. I have used it when I was teaching Sunday School and refer back to it often now with my grandson.

Jesus Loves Me

Jesus loves me, this I know, For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong, They are weak but He is strong.

Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me,
Yes, Jesus loves me, The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me, He who died, Heaven's gates to open wide,
He will wash away my sin, Let His little child come in.

Jesus loves me, loves me still, Though I'm very weak and ill,
From His shining throne on high, Comes to watch me where I lie.

Climb, Climb Up Sunshine Mountain

I love this song. It makes me so happy and these children do a wonderful job of singing it.

Zaccheus

Zaccheus

Zacchaeus was a wee little man, and a wee little man was he.
He climbed up in a sycamore tree, for the Lord he wanted to see.
And as the Savior passed him by, He looked up in the tree,
And he said, "Zacchaeus, you come down from there;
For I'm going to your house today, for I'm going to your house today"

Zacchaeus came down from that tree, as happy as he could be,
He gave his money to the poor, and said: "What a better man I'll be."

down in my heart, (where?), down in my heart,
I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart, (where?) down in my heart to stay.

Additional Verses:
I've got the peace that passes understanding down in my heart

Go Tell It On The Mountain

Go Tell It On The Mountain

Go tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere,
Go tell it on the mountain,
Our Jesus Christ is born.

When I was a seeker I sought both night and day, I asked the Lord to help me, And he showed me the way.

Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and everywhere, Go tell it on the mountain, Our Jesus Christ is born.

He made me a watchman Upon a city wall, And if I am a Christian, I am the least of all.

Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and everywhere, Go tell it on the mountain, Our Jesus Christ is born.

Chrous:
Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me.r> Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me.
Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me-way beyond the blue.

Additional Verse:
I took Jesus as my Savior, You take Him too.
I took Jesus as my Savior, You take Him too.
I took Jesus as my Savior, You take Him too,
Yes He's Calling you.

Sunday School Medley

I had almost forgotten about "Sunbeam" and that was always one of my favorites.
powered by Youtube

A Sunbeam

1. Jesus wants me for a sunbeam,
To shine for Him each day;
In every way try to please Him,
At home, at school, at play.
* Refrain:
A sunbeam, a sunbeam,
Jesus wants me for a sunbeam;
A sunbeam, a sunbeam,
I'll be a sunbeam for Him.
2. Jesus wants me to be loving,
And kind to all I see;
Showing how pleasant and happy,
His little one can be.
3. I will ask Jesus to help me
To keep my heart from sin;
Ever reflecting His goodness,
And always shine for Him.
4. I'll be a sunbeam for Jesus,
I can if I but try;
Serving Him moment by moment,
Then live for Him on high.

I have no memories of going to Sunday School

Rieke says:

As a European Citizen I don't have Sunday School experience. But I remember well some of these songs, which obviously made the 'travel' over the ocean. We sang them or at school or in other youth-groups and someone plays the guitar... Singing, laughing, spending time together (especially when you are young) is great. Thanks for re-bringing these memories in my mind.

LoKackl says:

I did not (know I) enjoyed these songs until grown and my children wanted to sing them. (I was a very confused "youngun.") Your VERY extensive collection reminds me of how easy it was to parent children who liked Sunday School and looked forward to attending. In childhood, I, on the other hand, cried like a banchee at the sight of the building! Thanks for the memories!!

Jewelsofawe says:

I did not like sunday school all that much. Youth Group was cool though!

mulberry says:

I never went to Sunday school either but my neighbors did, and we would sing a couple of these once in awhile.

BigGirlBlue says:

I never went to Sunday school but I recognize a few of these songs from grade school... when they were allowed to sing this kind of music.

I loved going to Sunday School and remember these songs.

LittleIsMore says:

What a great lens! I too was raised on these Sunday School songs!
What a refreshing lens! Thanks!

Alfiesgirl says:

I remember being collected along with several other children on our housing estate by Mrs Worm our Sunday school teacher. We all wore our best clothes and our white long socks kept just for this occasion. I remember singing the song i have mentioned above all else..and another called "Love is something if you give it away, you end up having more"

Alfiesgirl says:

I remember our Sunday school teacher..Mrs Worm was her name and every child on our housing estate would be waiting at the top of our road at 10am every Sunday morning because Mrs Worm would walk from the chapel St.Barnabas to collect us. There has always been one song which i still sing to this day every Sunday.really! It goes like this
S for sin a dreadful thing
A for Adam who first fell
V for victory Jesus brings
I the one he came to tell
Open now your hearts to him
U for this song we sing
Rejoice for he is king
that will bring us back to J.E.S.U.S for sin a dreadful thing..and so on....
My memories of Sunday school are a joy to have..i shall always cherish them...Tina x

karendd123 says:

I love this lens. I sing songs with my little Sunday School children each week. Most of them are the ones you have listed.

Ginny Suter says:

Wonderful memories come to me as I listen to some of these songs. My mother and grandmother taught Sunday School for years, and I could almost hear my grandmother singing as I merely read the lyrics! The songs themselves are such a blessing, but it was the love of Jesus that the teachers conveyed to the children that made Sunday School such a beloved experience and important part of my own spiritual development. Thanks be to God for parents who go to church and take their children. In today's world, where most mothers and fathers are both working outside of the home, getting to church on Sunday morning takes real commitment and extra effort. I wish that all parents today would try as hard to bring their children to church regularly as they try to see that their children participate in organized sports! I wouldn't trade my early Sunday School experiences for anything!

In The Temple

by request

Someone visiting this lens was looking for the words to "In The Temple". My sisters and I asked everyone we knew for help in finding this and finally one of Joan's friends came through for us. Hope this helps.

In the temple, in the temple Stood a happy boy one day,
And the doctors wondered greatly at the words they heard Him say.

It was Jesus! It was Jesus! Standing in the temple there.
And the light of heav'n was shining in His face so pure and fair.

It was Jesus who was teaching and they listened to His word,
As He told them of His mission from the great and mighty Lord.

It was Jesus! It was Jesus! Standing in the temple there.
And the light of heav'n was shining in His face so pure and fair.

Let us ever then be eager to sit down at Jesus' feet
To be learning from our Saviour, and His lessons to repeat.

It was Jesus! It was Jesus! Standing in the temple there.
And the light of heav'n was shining in His face so pure and fair.

If you enjoyed these Sunday School Songs, you will certainly enjoy this lens!

I am wondering if anyone knows what the name of this song is. I have entered what I remember from childhood in various ways in my search engine and have had no luck.
