Great lens! You might enjoy my lens on Bible verses set to music: http://www.squidoo.com/bible-verses-set-to-music . My favorite DVD of children's songs in Steve Green's "Hide 'em in Your Heart." They're Bible verses set to music that children will love. You can also find it on YouTube. Blessed and liked.

There is a long tradition among us Catholics that 'he who sings prays twice' and all of these songs are a double duty prayer to the Living God and to Jesus. Children LOVE them, and can sing their hearts out to the Lord, which of course, He dearly loves.

Nancy, I thought of this lens this morning in church. Our pastor was talking about the scripture where Jesus calls Peter the rock, the foundation. Right away I was singing in my mind, "Jesus is the rock of my salvation. His banner over me is love." and doing the motions we did when my kids were little. You have the one about the wise man building his house upon the rock. Guess that will be in my head now for the rest of the day, which is a good thing! This is such a wonderful lens. Thank you!
  • OhMe Jan 1, 2012 @ 6:22 pm | delete

  • Frischy Dec 12, 2011 @ 8:22 am | delete
I loved hearing the Sunday School is over song! Had not thought about that in years! We used to sing another song at the beginning of the class too. I think it went like this: Good morning to you! Good morning to you! We're all in our places with bright, shiny faces. This is the way to start a new day.

I was first introduced to Jesus as Savior in Sunday School. I have never out grown that message. I now introduce little children to Jesus through the children's ministry at our church. I was looking for the lyrics to a song we sang in Sunday School "And God said the sun should shine" when I landed on this site. All I can say is Praise God from whom all these gifts flow - to build encourage the whole body the church wherever we are... (1Cor 12:7-11a) and thank you for your obedience to His prompting and setting up this site

I've never been to Sunday school neither knew this would exist, although it might exist in my area; however, I enjoyed learning that you went to Sunday school, learn what it is as well as read the lyrics. You surely had a good time, it shows through your page - like most of your Pendleton pages from which the pleasure and pride shine. Keep up the great job and keep sharing Pendleton with us, it's one of my most delightful readings.

Wow thanks for sharing all of this. Brings back a lot of memories for many people I'm sure. All the children are soooo adorable :)

If you have time, please check out my new lens that I'm trying to get likes for. I just started on Squidoo and think its awesome so far. I help a lot of churches and youth groups with fundraising and I have lots of helpful content to share, but apparently it's not visible publicly yet.

I'm new to all this though, and it says I also need a Like from a Giant Squid =)

Not sure what that is yet, but hopefully I can find one, lol.

    Thanks and God bless!

I remember some of these songs, but many I don't. My all time favorite and the one I still sing is "The Old Rugged Cross"...for some reason that one stuck with me. You have a great list here and nice to see the added articles of the Tate Family, and the one on activities to do at Sunday School. *Blessed*

This Little Light of Mine was always my favorite song to sing at Sunday School, followed closely by Jesus Loves Me. Blessed by a SquidAngel! Is it appropriate that the security word for me is "squidsing"? Hmmm.

Boy, this really takes me back. My dad was a pastor and my mom ran Sunday School and Children's Church. When I became a teen, LOL! I was very competitive and always won the "Sword Drills". Swords UP! : ) I started teaching and leading the kid's songs too. I've sung all of those songs. They are etched in my memory forever. Thanks for a wonderful lens.

I am very happy to have found this lens. I grew up in a country where religion was quasi banned and in the "good" families it was frown upon as the opium for the masses. I miss that beautiful part of a childhood, when one can learn that help is always close, no matter the hardship or sorrow. Thanks.
  • MikeDeHaan Feb 23, 2011 @ 8:21 pm | delete
The phrase "sword drill" jumped out because my childhood church used that term, but not my current one. Thanks for that memory.

Thank you so much for going to the trouble of making this site. I couldn't remember all these songs, except for a few and I take a turn at teaching a class of preschoolers. Now that this site has refreshed my memories, I can be a better sunday school teacher. Helping hide the word in kid's hearts through easy to learn songs. The songs I did remember from sunday school were what helped me when I turned away from God for a short time in my life. They were also the songs that I sung when I began to gradually come back, because they were the only worship type songs I knew. This blesses my heart so much. Thank you.

Really great lens, Ohme! I have the hymns from my Catholic childhood deeply ingrained, but have discovered many Protestant hymns as I got older. I've both taught Sunday school and coordinated classes, and I also taught in a Catholic school where we began each morning with prayer and a hymn. What a great idea to make this lens! I'll bet you've gotten lots of readers leaving with a song in their hearts!

I'm 62 years old and I have fond memories of Sunday School at Lowe's Memorial Church in South Baltimore. I remember a specific song that I can't seem to find on the internet. My mother used to sing this song to us and to our children when she was rocking them to sleep. I think it's called "God is Everywhere." Some of the lyrics are: God is everywhere, his love is over all, through the whispering breezes, shadows as they fall, in the babbling brooks and in the trees so tall, God is everywhere. (chorus) God is in the flowers and the birds that sing, over all the earth he makes the joy bells ring. Into every heart a little love he brings, God is everywhere. Does anyone remember this one?

Some of my happiest childhood memories are of singing in Sunday School. The ONLY thing I liked better was the cookie and punch refreshment. I liked the songs with hand motions that went along - "the wise man built his house upon the rock" is one I loved, and of course, "this little light of mine." But I think my all time favorite was the countdown song that started out "somewhere in outer space, God has prepared a place ..." we all memorized the verse at the end " ... and if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself, that where I am there ye may be also." Love this lens ... had to come back and enjoy it again this morning.

I can't say that i ever sung any of the songs which you have listed except for "This little light of mine"..sadly when i tried to play the video i found that it had been removed from youtube for breach of policy of some sort. I have taken the liberty to add my own most remembered Sunday school song in the space provided for our sunday school memories above..i hope you don't mind but it was and still is one of my favourites and i teach it to almost every child i meet lol..i also loved to sing "Jesus loves me yes i know..because the Bible tells me so"..anyway thankyou for filling my spiritual moment today with this wonderful lens..Brightest-Blessings Tina x

I am wondering if anyone knows what the name of this song is. I have entered what I remember from childhood in various ways in my search engine and have had no luck. He is the chorus: Jesus I love you I want you to know that I long to be near you wherever you go, So here I kneel before you to do the best that I can do and I just want to tell you Jesus I love you.

I always feel a little cleaner after visiting here. Just now I got to pondering over "Be Careful Little Eyes" and thought of many of the children I've worked with who have seen and heard too many things that they should never have been exposed to. This is the pure fun our children would love to be a part of.

My sister and I are trying to remember the lyrics to a song that started like this: I love to go to Sunday School, I love to sing the songs. But I hate to see a vacant pew, I know there's something wrong. I want the Lord to be proud of me, his work I will gladly do...then we lost the lyrics. Can anybody help?

But I hate to see a vacant pew, for I know there's something wrong
I want the Lord to be proud of me His work I'll gladly do
I know a song to bring them in. Listen and learn it, too.
    (Chorus)
Go to the highways, tell 'em on the byways, tell 'em that you're their friend.
Tell 'em the church is open they're welcome to drop in.
Talk just a little bit, sing just a little bit, throw in a smile or two.
Sorta heavy on the how-de-do, for the Lord is a countin' on you.

I love this squidoo--pictures and songs! I loved the songs that I was taught growing up at the First Presbyterian Church in Clinton, SC. Not only the childrens's songs, bkut the others led by John Holland Hunter in church. Music at church was big in my life growing up. Later, in the Pendleton Presbyterian Church Adult Sunday School Class, The Rev. Wylie Hogue said something that I have never fogotten..."The hymns and songs sung in church form the life theology of most church members." I still love the hymns we sing, and, I am drawn most to those that speak to my soul and life and how I live out my theology.

Thank you, Sittonbull and thank you all for your responses and for taking the time to look at this lens. These songs are so special to me and were so much a part of my growing up. I realize that not everyone shares these same memories so it means a lot that you would take the time to listen to something that may be unfamiliar to you. Sittonbull, I cherish those early memories and hope "Miss Frances" knows what an influence she was to a lot of little children.

Ohme between this lens and Joan4's 100th, you Tate girls have really ushered me on an enjoyable journey down memory lane! That picture of you and your mama Becky is a classic and I immediately recognized you both before seeing the caption. I have often had flashbacks of Mrs. Francis Martin telling the story of Zaccheus and others. She was the next thing to a Saint! This is a neat lens on it's own, but growing up in Pendleton Presbyterian Church with you made it a very special one. We truly did have all the joys of Mayberry... and I am very thankful for that! 5* and favorite!

Bless God--this is wonderful! Tipi sent it to me on Sunday and I came right over and wrote wonderful messages that just wouldn't send. I came back for a 2nd helping. Here's a little known fact. Tipi and I grew up in the United Methodist Church at Kabetogama and we even helped build the church as children, we were too young to be charter members, but our brother is one. We first met at our Dad's childhood home and got to keep the missionary pump organ at our house during the week in the winter to protect it from freezing. Boy did we sing!

I'm trying to remember the "Sunday School is over" that Joan mentioned. Brought back some memories. I love singing! I was in the choir once, about 9 or 10 years old. I can still see Grandma sitting on the front row of that old church where she lays in rest now, after 99 years of living and losing all but one of her 12 children before she passed. She had such a look of pride on her face for her little granddaughter. It surely couldn't have been because she could hear my singing -- people usually put their hands over their ears for that! :) To this day, I can't sing -- only my grandson likes to listen. I know just what you mean, OhMe. :)

I love old Sunday School songs. Even when I didn't go to church, for years, you could get me to sing hymns and Sunday School songs. I remember once driving with my friend, an exwife of an ex Methodist minister and we sang out all the songs! When I was in seminary in Arizona, I used to climb this cactus 'mountain' every morning and then sit on the top and belt out, "I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses, and the voice I hear falling on my ear, the son of God discloses. And he walks with me and he talks with me..." See, you got me started and I can't stop! ***** to you

You selected some great songs to put on this lens, OhMe! Just even the titles have ministered to my soul, and I can hear the Spirit of God's whisper in my ear. You have touched my life my dear. Have a great day!
  • Joan4 Jan 4, 2009 @ 10:12 am | delete
These are wonderful old favorites. Do you remember - Sunday School is over and we are going home. Goodbye. Goodbye. Be always kind and true.?

and the one I have sung to myself over and over even in adult - hood - Mrs. Jolly taught us -- What time I am afraid, Quick to myself I'll say, there is no need of fear, I know a better way. I'll pray to God this prayer and very brave will be. What time I a afraid, I will put my trust in Thee.
