Sunderland AFC - also known as The Black Cats - is a professional football club, playing in the English Premier League, after being promoted ahead of the 2007-2008 season. Historically, Sunderland AFC is the 6th most successful club in English football, having won the league title 6 times, and the FA Cup twice.
Most of their success, however, was acheived in the years previous to WWII. Over the recent decades Sunderland AFC has spent most of the time bouncing up and down between the 2 top divisions, and has yet to play in European competitons.
Sunderland AFC plays their home games at the Stadium of Light, a modern 49,000 capacity all-seater stadium (4th biggest in England), and their home ground since 1997.
Sunderland AFC is owned by Drumaville, a consortium of investors lead by former player Niall Quinn, who is also the club chairman.
Team manager is Roy Keane, who started his managing career with the club in the 2006-2007 season, and a catalyst for the clubs remarkable turnaround. As a player he was known as a no-nonsense midfielder, always making a 110% effort, an attitude he has instilled in his players as well.
The team captain is Dean Whitehead, a flexible and versatile midfielder, who can also play in defence.
Other key players in the squad include: Craig Gordon (GK), Russell Anderson (D), Kieran Richardson (M) and Dwight Yorke (A)
