Sunflower Paintings Radiate Happiness
The summer of 2007 proved to be quite an exception because for the first time the deer ate my sunflowers and hollyhocks! I am happy to say in 2008 the infernal deer left the sunflowers alone so my paintings are freshly inspired again and the goldfinches fat and sassy.
The canvases I paint are often expansively large ones, sometimes five feet across, so the paintings make a dramatic statement. The cheery faces of sunflowers always make any room a joyful place.
All my artwork shown on this lens is copyright protected but if you would like prints, or originals for that matter, you can find them at RiverStone Gallery.
This image is a detail from Summer Awakening, painted from flowers grown in my colorful gardens.

The yellows in this painting are richly golden toned making the painting is bright and cheerful as a result.
This painting is available at RiverStone Gallery. I did a small study to begin developing the idea, and that has found a home at my daughter's house, I am happy to say.

The Sunflower Is Not a Flower
I Am Not Kidding, Read On!
Each part we call a petal on a sunflower is actually a ray floret, a complete flower in its own right. The ray florets have hugely exaggerated golden corollas.
The richly patterned centers are composed of disc florets which contain both pistils and stamens so they can produce seeds.
The sunflower is more like a city of flowers than an individual flower. That thought always delights me as I paint.
