Sunflower Paintings Radiate Happiness

I thoroughly delight in painting glorious summer sunflowers in rich butterscotch yellows and golds. I grow many of these flowers in my gardens for the goldfinches every year so I usually have plenty of sunflowers to paint.

The summer of 2007 proved to be quite an exception because for the first time the deer ate my sunflowers and hollyhocks! I am happy to say in 2008 the infernal deer left the sunflowers alone so my paintings are freshly inspired again and the goldfinches fat and sassy.

The canvases I paint are often expansively large ones, sometimes five feet across, so the paintings make a dramatic statement. The cheery faces of sunflowers always make any room a joyful place.

All my artwork shown on this lens is copyright protected but if you would like prints, or originals for that matter, you can find them at RiverStone Gallery.

This image is a detail from Summer Awakening, painted from flowers grown in my colorful gardens.

Sun Angel

Sun Angel

An Acrylic Painting 30" wide by 40" high

This sunflower painting provides an intimate view showing the petals protectively enclosing the center.

The yellows in this painting are richly golden toned making the painting is bright and cheerful as a result.

This painting is available at RiverStone Gallery. I did a small study to begin developing the idea, and that has found a home at my daughter's house, I am happy to say.

Summer Awakening

Summer Awakening by Sundell

An Acrylic Painting 48" wide by 36" high

I had a bouquet of sunflowers from my garden and moved in close to look at them. This sunflower painting emerged from that moment.

Beautiful signed and numbered limited edition giclee prints on canvas made from Summer Awakening are available at RiverStone Gallery.

The Sunflower Is Not a Flower

I Am Not Kidding, Read On!

Sunflowers belong to the composite family which means each blooming head is actually a tight grouping of one to two thousand flowers.

Each part we call a petal on a sunflower is actually a ray floret, a complete flower in its own right. The ray florets have hugely exaggerated golden corollas.

The richly patterned centers are composed of disc florets which contain both pistils and stamens so they can produce seeds.

The sunflower is more like a city of flowers than an individual flower. That thought always delights me as I paint.
