The Sun: A Vital Part Of Life

The life-giving rays emitted by our sun are widely known to have positive benefits for the human body. Lack of sun exposure can cause depression, Vitamin D deficiencies and other disorders. You may have noticed or heard about the increase in depression during winter months, when cold weather keeps people out of the sun. Seasonal Affective Disorder is very real and harmful. In locations where the sun is down longer than it's up, people often search for ways to increase exposure to artificial sun. People who aren't allowed outside for whatever reason may need a method as well, to combat the negative consequences that come from lack of sunshine.

Can you have too much sun? Of course. You can also have far too less sun. Medical News Today has a good article about sun exposure and how too little is worse than too much. On this page we'll tell you more about how the sun can help, and ways you can increase your exposure without harming yourself.

Necessary for plants and humans too

What good can the sun do?

Wavelengths from the sun can start a chemical chain reaction in your body that produces Vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiencies may help explain some cases of autism, breast cancer progression, prostate cancer and other illnesses. It can boost bone strength by encouraging the body to absorb calcium. Vitamin D may also help ward off diabetes, multiple sclerosis, gum disease and some cancers.

Taking Vitamin D supplements can be helpful, but very little is actually absorbed from most marketed vitamins. Sun rays can help boost Vitamin D very effectively.

The sun's rays are also shown to help with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which is caused in part by limited sun exposure. Think of it this way - a lot of people get depressed around the holidays, when they stay inside more due to the cold. A little sunshine can go a long way.

Sunshine, without massive humidity conditions, can also inspire you to get up and go. A sunny day can make everyday tasks a lot less onerous to pull off.

And of course, some people just like a good tan.

Problems caused by Vitamin D deficiencies

Osteoporosis is commonly caused by a lack of vitamin D, which greatly impairs calcium absorption.

Sufficient vitamin D prevents prostate cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, depression, colon cancer and schizophrenia.

"Rickets" is the name of a bone-wasting disease caused by vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D deficiency may exacerbate type 2 diabetes and impair insulin production in the pancreas.

Obesity impairs vitamin D utilization in the body, meaning obese people need twice as much vitamin D.

Vitamin D is used around the world to treat Psoriasis.

   Vitamin D deficiency causes schizophrenia.

Seasonal Affective Disorder is caused by a melatonin imbalance initiated by lack of exposure to sunlight.

Chronic vitamin D deficiency is often misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia because its symptoms are so similar: muscle weakness, aches and pains.

Your risk of developing serious diseases like diabetes and cancer is reduced 50% - 80% through simple, sensible exposure to natural sunlight 2-3 times each week.

Infants who receive vitamin D supplementation (2000 units daily) have an 80% reduced risk of developing type 1 diabetes over the next twenty years.

Getting more sun without going outside

Some of us work all day inside and miss the best parts of the sun's journey. Some of us simply enjoy the night more than daytime and loathe the idea of getting up during the morning hours. Some of us live in places where periods of time outside can actually be unhealthy. Whatever the reason, it can be nice to have a source of the sun's beneficial rays that can be used inside a home or anywhere else with a power outlet.

You may also need more sun if: you live in a northern climate, can't go outside, it's cold, you have a natural Vitamin D deficiency, you like to tan, you're highly allergic to outside allergens, you live in a place with a lot of smog, you work nights and sleep days or you find yourself depressed and there appears to be no reason.

There are several types of sunlamps available that are relatively affordable and easy to use. We'll go over a few of them.

Important Notes

While all of these sunlamps are very beneficial and can help with skin conditions, emotional and mental disorders and bump up your Vitamin D production, there can always be too much of a good thing. You should always use these lamps only for the recommended treatment times. It is better to slowly tan over a couple of weeks than to get there in one day and potentially harm yourself. It is always recommended to speak to a doctor before starting any health regimen.
