Beautiful, peaceful Fuerteventura for all kinds of people
If you like vast Beaches and lots of sun - this is the place for you. It is raining average 6 days per year! Some of the beaches are so vast, you cannot see people at all. There are fantasic waves for surfers and lots of shallow beaches for children. Sometimes there is an artist showing how to build sand sculptures...and I mean Sculptures that are awsome. Here you can learn and get Certificate for Scuba diving or learn how to windsurf. The wildlife in the Atlantic Ocean is so fantastic. Here are i third of all the whales and Dolphines in the world passing through. You can go in a glass bottom boat or use snorkle equipment to see turtles, fishes and beautiful reaves.
The name Canary islands comes from the latin word for dog Canis. When the Islands started to be inhabited by Spanish sailors (about year 1400) there were lots of dogs on them. The 'Serinus canaria forma domestica' or Canary bird got the name from the islands later.

Fuerteventura is the second largest island of the famous Spanish archipelago known as the Canary Islands , just off the northern coast of Africa. It is lined by 210km of lovely beaches with white sand and crystal clear blue and turquoise water. Jandia is the longest beach in Europe! The weather in Fuerteventura is definitely so warm and pleasant that you will really like to spend as much time as possible there. This island is also a must for those who enjoy diving and windsurfing. Fuerteventura has recently turned into one of the main Spanish tourist resorts for water sports such as sailing, water skiing and even fishing. Needless to say that there is a long list of ideal beaches for surfing. Many of the hotels are wheel chair and baby buggy friendly. You can walk from your hotel to "your" lovely beach!
The ancient town Betancuria located in the centre of Fuerteventura is named after the French conqueror Jean de Bethencourt , known to have been the first town in the Canary Islands. According to historians, its rich water resources and vegetation attracted the guanche people, that is, the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands . Some interesting traces of this civilization can be seen in the archaeological museum of the town, Tefia.
Fuerteventura is a very calm place and the people that live here are kind. If you can speak Spanish you can benefit more but there are many areas where shop owners and others speak English, German or even Swedish :-)
In the north there is Baku Water Park that is worth a visit. They have water slides and lots of fun. Be prepared to spend the day. In the south of the island is the wonderful Oasis Park - La Lajita with 200 animal spieces including Alligators, Monkeys, Giraffes, Zebras and Birds. The 200,000 Square meters of Botanical Gardens, which feature many Endemic Species and Cacti, can be enjoyed from the back of a Camel on the Camel Safari.

The Egyptian Vulture
A rare bird
Egyptian Vultures are quite widely distributed and may be found in Southern Europe, in Northern Africa, Canary Island Fuerteventura and in Western and Southern Asia. The adult Egyptian Vulture usually measures 85 cm from the point of the beak to the extremity of the tail and 1.7 meters between the tips of the wings. It weighs about 2.1 kilograms.
The Egyptian Vulture is declining in large parts of its range, often severely. In Europe and most of the Middle East, it is half as plentiful as it was about twenty years ago, and the populations in India and southwestern Africa have collapsed entirely.
Fuerteventura Egyptian vulture
In Fuerteventura they get help - through that they get privacy and we are not told where they are nesting.

WHAT A WAVE!
Surfing indeed
Flying shrimps!
Grashoppers

Now and then then wind bring locousts from Africa. They come in thousands if not millions.
After the long trip over the Atlantic ocean they are so exhausted and tired. They land and just sit there. They come all over the coast. I had a friend who did not leave her car when they came. She just did not want them to land in her hair :)
We picked them like flowers on our patio. They sat all over the place and the dogs and cats eat the ones on the ground.
They are absolutely harmless - these flying shrimps!
