Super Bowl XLIV Preview

It has been a long season, but the climax is finally here. From free agency, to the NFL combine, to the NFL Draft, to the preseason, to the regular season, to the playoffs and to the Super Bowl, two teams have traveled the distance and outlasted the rest of the pack.

The New Orleans Saints will represent the NFC in the Super Bowl while the Indianapolis Colts will represent the AFC. Most Super Bowl picks are siding with the Colts right now for a number of reasons, if the Saints won, it shouldn't upend too many Super Bowl predictions. Both teams were the best in the NFL this year and both will be ready for a shootout in this contest.

Super Bowl Odds:
New Orleans Saints +5½
Indianapolis Colts -5½
O/U 56½

How The Colts Got Super Bowl XLIV

Pierre Garcon after the Divisional Championship Game

The Colts were a popular Super Bowl pick at the beginning of the year and they have paid off their backers handsomely.

The Colts were perfect throughout most of the year and it actually took them 16 weeks to lose their first game. At that point, they had already clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC and had nothing to gain by going for more wins.

Some people felt that they could have finished the regular season perfect had they tried to, but in the end, they decided to focus on winning a Super Bowl instead of being the second team in NFL history to finish the regular season with 16 wins.

In the playoffs, the Colts used their home field advantage well and after stomping the Baltimore Ravens, they crushed the New York Jets as well.

Now they are in the Super Bowl for the second time in four years and it is that experience that is fueling Super Bowl Predictions.

How The Saints Got To Super Bowl XLIV

New Orleans Saints' Cheerleaders

The Saints matched the Colts with their perfect stride for the first 14 weeks of the season but their stretch run was very different. The Saints lost at home in Week 15 to the Dallas Cowboys, then they were shocked at home in Week 16 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and then they were throttled by the Carolina Panthers in Week 17 as they rested their starters.

While the Saints faded down the stretch, there was no question that they were the best team in the NFC throughout the entire year. For the first time in the Sean Payton-Drew Brees era, the Saints committed to the run and brought balance to the offense. On top of that, defensive coordinator Gregg Williams dialed up more blitzes than any other team in the NFL and the Saints turned a mediocre defense into an aggressive opportunistic unit.

All of that translated to the best record in the NFC and home field advantage in the playoffs. After dismissing the defending NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals in the divisional round, the Saints sent Brett Favre and the Minnesota into the offseason with a win in the NFC Championship Game.

With the win, the Saints qualified for the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history.

The Story

Older photo of Drew Brees and Peyton Manning shaking hands

There is no question that the story of Super Bowl XLIV will be the offenses.

Peyton Manning versus Drew Brees, Reggie Wayne versus Marques Colston and the Colts explosive unit versus the Saints No. 1 overall offense.

With an over/under at 56.5 points, few Super Bowl predictions are expecting a 14-7 final.

With two of the best quarterbacks and offenses in this generation lining up against each other, this is going to be a shootout of epic proportions. Tape those eye-lids up and make sure you don't blink.

Super Bowl Predictions

The Vince Lombardi Trophy

The Saints and Colts were the two best teams in the NFL and undoubtedly, this is a clear matchup of the best team in the AFC versus the best team in the NFC.

But make no mistake about it, there is a slight difference: the Colts have experience on their side.

As we saw in the NFC Championship Game where the Saints showed some nerves and barely eked out a win against a team that handed them five turnovers, experience is a big factor.

For the Saints, this will be their first trip to the Super Bowl in franchise history. They will be excited to be in the moment and they will be experiencing new territory for the first time.

But for the Colts, this is a business trip. They have played - and won - on this stage before and having that Super Bowl ring on your finger is going to be a big difference in this contest.

The differences between these two teams are slight but experience will be the reason why the Colts win their second Super Bowl in four years while the Saints banner will read "2009 NFC Champions".
