WowWee Rovio (CES 2008)

Personal Assistant Robot

WowWee has brought us the RoboSapien, RoboReptile, RoboRaptor, the Dragonfly Robot, and more. At the Consumer Electronics Show 2008, WowWee introduced the Rovio - a rolling cart-like gizmo that features a video camera. Rovio can be controlled from any device with an internet connection which means the video can be watched online while you control it via your cellphone.

In another post, Trend Hunter's Bianca Bartz notes, "The Rovio is a favourite, for sure. It's a Wi-Fi controlled web cam that you steer around, like an electronic car, but instead, the remote control can be your cellphone, computer, video game console, PDA, etc. It can be seen in the gallery, but it's a really neat little invention. It has a camera built in so you can watch the surroundings the electronic gizmo is guided into. From remote locations, users can easily get the Rovio to interact with its surroundings thanks to the clear picture and sound. It has NorthStar, which is basically a mini GPS system so the robot know where is it, as well as the objects around it, making navigation a breeze." Trendhunter

World's First Air-Powered Car: Zero Emissions by Next Summer

India's largest automaker is set to start producing the world's first commercial air-powered vehicle. The Air Car, developed by ex-Formula One engineer Guy Nègre for Luxembourg-based MDI, uses compressed air, as opposed to the gas-and-oxygen explosions of internal-combustion models, to push its engine's pistons. Some 6000 zero-emissions Air Cars are scheduled to hit Indian streets in August of 2008.

Barring any last-minute design changes on the way to production, the Air Car should be surprisingly practical. The $12,700 CityCAT, one of a handful of planned Air Car models, can hit 68 mph and has a range of 125 miles. It will take only a few minutes for the CityCAT to refuel at gas stations equipped with custom air compressor units; MDI says it should cost around $2 to fill the car's carbon-fiber tanks with 340 liters of air at 4350 psi. Drivers also will be able to plug into the electrical grid and use the car's built-in compressor to refill the tanks in about 4 hours.

Of course, the Air Car will likely never hit American shores, especially considering its all-glue construction. But that doesn't mean the major automakers can write it off as a bizarre Indian experiment - MDI has signed deals to bring its design to 12 more countries, including Germany, Israel and South Africa. Digg the article.

Moller M400 Skycar

Skycar SiteThe M400 itself certainley looks like something from a Sci-Fi movie, a mixture of fins and pods that would not have looked out of place in 'The Fifth Element' or 'Bladerunner'. The power for the vehicle comes from eight small 120hp Rotapower engines, a derivative of the Wankel engine designed in 1957 by Felix Wankel and best known for its use in the Mazda RX7. Dr Moller purchased the rights to the Wankel engine and quickly formed Freedom Motors to develop the Wankel engine for use in the Skycar. The Rotapower engines will allow the M400 Skycar to fly at 350 mph and get fifteen miles to the gallon and a 900 mile range, although future projections show that it could achieve forty mpg for a four-seater and eighty mpg for a one-seater. One of the best things about the lightweight rotary engine is that it causes far less pollution than a regular engine.

The Skycar will be able to take off and land vertically. Using a principle similar to that of the Harrier jump jet, the Moller M400 incorporates a patented thrust deflection vane system that redirects thrust, enabling it to hover or to take off and land vertically from almost any surface. Initial test cars will need trained pilots, but Moller's vision is of automated skyways where the navigational computers do all the work, and Moller's design calls for three computers to assure redundancy. However, some level of driver/pilot training will still be necessary.

Sony's Organic Electroluminescent Display

On May 24, Sony unveiled what it is calling the world's first flexible, full-color organic electroluminescent display (OLED) built on organic thin-film transistor (TFT) technology. OLEDs typically use a glass substrate, but Sony researchers developed new technology for forming organic TFT on a plastic substrate, enabling them to create a thin, lightweight and flexible full-color display. The 2.5-inch prototype display supports 16.8 million colors at a 120 x 160 pixel resolution (80 ppi, .318-mm pixel pitch), is 0.3 mm thick and weighs 1.5 grams without the driver.

According to Sony, which plans to release a new line of miniature TVs this year and is bolstering efforts to develop next-generation flat-panel OLEDs, this new technology will lead to the development of thinner, lighter and softer electronics.

The company is scheduled to present the results of its research at the SID 2007 International Symposium now underway in the US. Trend Hunter

Wow,Jana this is cool! I just saw Ed Dale from the 30DC plus just go on and on about how great the Pulse pen is. I watched the demo and it is so cool that it records everything you take notes on at the same time so you never miss anything. It is also loaded with stuff to send to documents on your computer and then you can print out notes that were recorded via audio, saves the hassle of writing all the time. Ed Dale really knows how to spot super cool gadgets, but your Lens, Super Cool Gadgets spots them a lot earlier. Thanks Jana, I am going to grab one now! Later....
