Super Mario 3 Cheats
Warp whistles, Infinite Lives, and 1-Ups
In the tradition of the Super Mario game series, the warp zones made an appearance in Super Mario 3 in the form of warp whistles. One toot on the whistle, and you'll be whisked away to the warp zone area, where you can be transported to worlds 2-8, depending on the whistle you get, and what level you blow the whistle at.Other cheats in the game involve a little skill, like the 99 lives "cheat." In the first Super Mario Bros installment, you could get 99 lives by stomping the turtle on the stairs in succession, resulting in 99 lives (and eventually death if you went over 99). In Super Mario 3, the concept is much the same, but made easier through the Raccoon Suit. With a few wags of the tail, you can slow the descent of Mario onto enemies, one after another. Once you hit a certain number of enemies without touching the ground, you'll begin scoring 1-Ups again and again.

The Koopalings
Bowser's mischievious children

Bowser's 8 Koopaling children, as they appear 8 bit style in Super Mario 3
One of the biggest advancements in Super Mario 3 was the addition of dynamic bosses that weren't repetitive like Birdo and Bowser. Each world was headed by a different Koopaling, who were the children of Bowser. You fight the Koopalings in order of age. From youngest to oldest, they are Larry Koopa, Morton Koopa Jr, Wendy O. Koopa, Iggy Koopa, Roy Koopa, Lemmy Koopa, and Ludwig Von Koopa.

This game was so wildly popular that a cartoon series was made to promote the game and to capitalize on the popularity of Mario at the time. Released in 1990 in the USA, Super Mario 3 broke sales records for video games. The cartoon series was adapted from the Japanese version of the game, which was released in 1988. At that time, the Koopalings had no names, so the cartoon series made up their own (not knowing the actual names would be different in the U.S. version released in 1990). The cartoon show was a massive hit, airing on Saturday mornings alongside Captain N: The Gamemaster. This DVD set has the entire series that aired, along with bonus material.

- I have a hard time picking an all time fave from the NES. There were just too many that I loved from that era. Three that I played the most were Rygar, Bionic Commando and Yes, SMB3, but LoZ ties up there as well.

- This is an awesome game i own every version of it, except the NES one sadly (used to). It is right up there with SMW for SNES as my favorite Mario games. It is one of the most fast paced Mario Games even on the NES thanks to the P meter thing (still have no idea what thats called after over 20 years)

- Okay, I played this last weekend. I was babysitting, and an 8 year old sat with his DS and laughed when I asked to play, saying "You don't know anything about Mario Bros.". HA! I proceeded to dig out my original NES and hook it up to the HDTV (which was a chore). Then after he laughed again at me blowing into the cartridge, we played Super Mario 3. He knew some of the boards completely - they are repeated in the game he had. Anyway.....he went hope with a bit more respect for my video game ability.

- I LOVED Super Mario 3. I mastered it. I just watched that Warp Whistles video and thought "Duh, he missed the coin on the second bring on the top at :42". Funny how drilled into your brain a meaningless piece of information like that can be. I recently read an interesting interview with the creator of Super Mario Bros.

- Very cool interview.
I agree! I played Super Mario 3 for the first time in ten years or so and it's amazing the stupid things you remember, down to where a mushroom is located in a bunch of hidden blocks (yet it's hard to remember the capital of South Dakota).
