Facial skin care can be simple!

As we face aging skin, many of us become more aware of the importance of facial skin care. You'll almost certainly want to change or add products as your skin shows signs of aging like wrinkles, discoloration, sun spots, dryness, changes in texture, and sagging. Whatever aging skin problems you have now, you'll want to build around a basic skin care routine. I'll recommend what products you'll want to be sure to include in any facial skin care routine. Of course you'll want to add some products depending on your particular concerns: if you want to reduce wrinkles, you probably want to use a richer night cream and anti aging serum. As you may know, I vary my routine slightly for morning and night, and some products are good for both.

Facial Skin Care List

  • Makeup remover - this you'll want to use first, and only at night! You should never go to bed with makeup on, so there's no need for remover in the A.M.
  • Facial cleanser - the only job this guy should do is clean your face. Forget about cleansers that claim to do more than one thing (the exception is cleansers that exfoliate, but don't use these every day). They don't stay on your skin long enough for most active ingredients to work. If you want to save time, try a combo sunscreen / moisturizer or an eye cream / anti aging serum. Simple is sometimes best. You don't want it to dry out your skin, just remove dirt. Especially if your skin is sensitive, try something like Cetaphil, it's very inexpensive and works really well!
  • Moisturizer - this is where you can try a multipurpose product. I like to apply to skin that's slightly damp, although I might put another product, like anti-aging serum, on first. My daytime moisturizer has SPF, and I like it to have the highest I can find. I don't like to depend on one product to do too many things, though, so maybe one other purpose like skin lifting or reducing wrinkles would be ok in a moisturizer, but not too many.
  • Eye cream - this is another place to use a combo product to save time. At night, I use a heavier cream that can be a little bit greasy. I also like that to have a wrinkle reducer since it stays on so long. But my day cream is lighter, and dries to a nice finish so it doesn't interfere with my makeup if I wear any!
That's it! If you have these four products in your arsenal, then you can't go too wrong. I don't like to use astringent on my aging skin because it's so drying. If you do want to use one, try to get on without alcohol or witch hazel, they're too harsh.
Have fun adding your own different products, and try to spread out anything irritating over your morning and night routines. Most people can benefit from exfoliating their skin, but don't do this too often - twice a week is usually enough. I'll write more about exfoliating another time.
