And the Winners Are...
Ninety lenses were created by lensmasters for the Superhero Project. The organizers reviewed the eligible lenses* and now it is time to announce the winning lenses, the winning lensmasters and the winning charities of the SuperHero Project for Charity.
This lens was created to feature the 5 winning lenses and runner's up from the SuperHero Project. These are the 5 most sincere, creative, well-written lenses selected by a panel of lensmasters. Each of these lenses wins $500 for the the charity of their choice a spot as Lens of the Day.
The goal of the Squidoo SuperHero Project was to create 5 lenses for charity about heroes who have inspired you, mentored you, changed the way you see the world, or just made you smile.
The SuperHero Project was the brainchild of Anne Reidy, Non-Profit Organizer at Squidoo as a way of raising money for the Squidoo Charity Fund.
*In order to be considered an "Eligible lens" the lens had to be one of 5 submitted by the same lensmaster or only lensmasters who created 5 Superhero lenses were eligible for the contest.
Let's see who the winners are...

The Runner's Up
We could only pick 5 winners for the Superhero contest (and believe me, that was nigh impossible). Well, we're such big softies, and the participants so astounded us, that we also picked 5 surprise runners-up, each to get $100 donated to their favorite charities.
Here's the roundup of 5 more great lenses for charity:
--Want a great way to thank a teacher who makes a difference? How about this? http://www.squidoo.com/lynnettecarrhicks
--Water can save the world. Dr. Evans the dentist shows us how.
http://www.squidoo.com/humanitariandentist
--Cari Clement wants world peace. So started a knitting coop in Rwanda. Amazing? You bet. Have a look. http://www.squidoo.com/rwandaknits
--"Superheroes see a problem, expose it to the world, challenge it, then proceed to change it any way they can, usually with great personal sacrifice. Kartick is an example of a Superhero by definition." Superhero? Sure.

--As a neurosurgeon Ben Carson has saved thousands of lives. As a philanthropist he is changing thousands of lives. Great combo, great lens.

Friday July 11 - The Anonymous Alcoholic
Friday's Superhero lens comes from none other than our own Chef Keem. His topic is the Anonymous Alcoholic. This lens is dedicated to those who mustered the willpower to turn over what little ego-based will and power they had left, to a higher guidance. Thus they could bear witness to millions who came after them (myself included) - of a working solution to a seemingly hopeless problem.
I am glad to see such a positive look at the topic. I have, unfortunately, cared for too many of the ones who ended up dying prematurely..."in car accidents, from liver and heart diseases, or a variety of other related causes."
See their website for more information on Alcoholics Anonymous.
Chef Keem designated the Beneficiary of the $500 Prize as Room to Read (one of my personal favorite charities).

Thursday July 10 - Brittany & Robbie Bergquist
"In 2005, Brittany (age 13) and Robbie Bergquist (age 12) could have spent their 21 dollars on a video game or some burgers and fries, or maybe even have donated it to charity... but they had a great idea--a vision. They started a non-profit organization called Cell Phones for Soldiers. So you're thinking...that's nice...they probably had some car washes and sent a few hundred bucks worth of cell phones to the soldiers.
Well, they did slightly better than that--their registered 501c3 non-profit organization has raised almost $1 million in donations and distributed more than 400,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas."
These Superhero kids show us that doing something for others isn't limited to those who are old enough and rich enough. There's a whole new way to give, and it's in the hands of the quick, the young, and the plugged in.
Super indeed.
The Beneficiary of the $500 Prize is Cell Phones for Soldiers.
