  • Lazarus Rising Airs: 9/18/08
It's four months later and Dean wakes in a pine box. He's been freed from Hell. He has a joyful reunion with Sam and Bobby, but it isn't long before the three wonder what exactly pulled Dean from Hell and what it will want in return.
  • Are you there God? It's Me, Dean Winchester Airs: 9/25/08
Sam and Dean are stunned when the spirits of Meg (guest star Nikki Aycox) and Agent Henricksen (guest star C. Malik Whitfield) appear and accuse the Winchesters of failing them. Although rattled, the brothers must pull together to save Bobby, who is too crippled with guilt to fight off the angry ghosts of the young children he couldn't save.
  • In the Beginning Airs: 10/02/08
Dean is transported back in time and is shocked when he lands in Lawrence, Kansas. However, that shock turns to amazement after he runs into a young John Winchester (guest star Matthew Cohen) and Mary (guest star Amy Gumenick) who have just fallen in love. Dean isn't sure why he was sent back so he begins to enjoy the time with his parents and newfound grandfather (guest star Mitch Pileggi, "The X-Files"), who may be hiding a secret that is key to Sam and Dean's entire predicament.
  • Metamorphosis Airs: 10/09/08
Sam and Dean discover that Jack Montgomery (guest star Dameon Clark), a family man, is turning into a Rugaru, a creature that starts as a human but changes into a flesh-eating monster. The people who are infected don't understand what is happening until they turn into cannibals and eat another person. Understanding what it is like to be a victim of a twisted destiny, Sam believes he can reason with Jack and convince him to control his urges. Dean doesn't think Jack's animalistic behavior can be subdued and decides the only honorable thing to do is to shoot him.
  • Monster Movie Airs: 10/16/08
Dean and Sam investigate several murders at Oktoberfest. The first victim was found with bite marks on her neck, much like a vampire would leave, while the second victim has wounds that look like a werewolf attack. After a mummy rises from his crypt, Dean determines that a shape-shifter demon is terrorizing the town as iconic monsters from the old Hollywood movies.
  • Yellow Fever Airs: 10/23/08
Sam and Dean investigate the mysterious deaths of several men who apparently dropped dead of fright. They visit one of the victims in the morgue, and Dean becomes infected with the illness which starts as a general anxiety, then moves on to full-blown terror that eventually stops the heart. Sam and Bobby must find the root of the disease before Dean dies and is sent back to Hell.
  • It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester Airs: 10/30/08

Sam and Dean meet Uriel, who is much more coarse and less friendly compared to Castiel. Sam disobeys orders from Uriel to not interfere with certain demons who attack both the brothers and the town, so Uriel threatens their lives. The boys also fight against witches named Tracy and Don and another person (spirit?) named Samhain.
  • Wishful Thinking Airs: 11/06/08

Sam and Dean investigate when a small town's wishing well actually starts to grant the people's wishes.
  • I Know What You Did Last Summer Airs: 11/13/08

Sam, Dean, and Ruby discover the existence of a female prophet named Anna Milton, who can hear the voices of angels. They must find her and protect when she's targeted by a demon named Alastair, whom Dean recognizes from his time in Hell as well as Castiel and Uriel who both want her dead.
  • Heaven and Hell Airs: 11/20/08

Dean and Sam figure out why Castiel and his superior/handler, Uriel the Angel of Death, want Anna Milton dead when the three of them are forced to go on the run, not only from heavenly and vengeful angels, but from Alastair and his demon minions who also try to track down Sam, Dean, and Anna. With the assistance from the now-blind soothsayer, Pamela Barnes, they discover that 'Anna' is a fallen (former) angel and needs to seek her grace wings before the forces of both Heaven and Hell find them.
  • Family Remains Airs: 01/15/09

The boys investigate a farm house that seems to be haunted by a woman in the walls. A family moves out to the country house after the oldest son, Andy, died in a car accident last year. The woman in the wall kidnaps and kills the uncle and also kidnaps the youngest son, Danny. It is unsure whether or not Danny survives because the ghost seemed to enjoy playing with Danny. For some reason unknown to everyone, including Sam and Dean, is extremely motivated in saving Danny and helping this family.
  • Criss Angel Is A Douchebag Airs: 01/22/09

Sam and Dean are faced with magicians who are dealing in black magic. The brothers investigate the situation after people are found dead in similar ways as the magic tricks the magicians perform on stage. One of the magicians, Charlie, is from the time of P.T. Barnum and found a grimoire, a book of real magic filled with a variety of black magic including an immorality spell.
  • Afterschool Special Airs: 01/29/09

A mysterious death finds Sam and Dean returning to one of the high schools they briefly attended while traveling around the country with their dad. But flashbacks reveal that the short time they were at the school resulted in a dramatic effect on the future.
  • Sex and Violence Airs: February

The younger Winchester will soon meet a doctor with whom he hits it off. And by hit it off, I mean they get nekkid. This big Dean vs. Sam fight is being made out to be more than it is. While the brothers will physically attack each other, the circumstances they're in will explain the violence. In other words, I'm hearing the boys aren't exactly acting of their own free will.

Rumor Mill

Some of these will be confirmed, some of these will not.
  • Some fans predicted that Dean (Jensen Ackles) would escape Hell fairly quickly and without any long-term side effects. According to Kripke, that's not going to be the case. The Supernatural creator told TV Guide that Dean will be cooling his heels in Hell for a long time, and that his bond with Sam will be massively affected as a result.

  • Eric Kirpe reveals: What happens to Dean in hell and how Dean gets out become primary concerns of Season 4. [...] Dean spends a lot more time in hell than anyone's probably thinking. Dean could spend - in human time - six months, maybe more. In hell time, who knows how many years or decades that might be. I won't tell you how he gets out, but he will emerge to a different landscape. A lot has changed since he's been away, and he has to readjust to his loved ones after being gone for so long. [...] It takes hundreds of years to be burned away into a demon. Dean won't be a demon, but there will be an ongoing mystery. When he gets out of hell, he'll have little recollection of what happened to him down there. That's one of the mysteries of the season. [...] Ruby will be back, and we're introducing a new supernatural species. We intend to bring back Steve Williams, the old embittered hermit hunter Rufus. [... Dean's hellish sojourn] will affect [the relationship between the brothers] massively. We'll slowly unfold Dean remembering what happened in hell, and that will drastically affect their relationship. Dean is basically a POW coming home from the worst hellhole - literally - ever. How do you reconnect with your life when you've been through something that horrific? That becomes one of his issues. But don't worry, he's still the same smart ass he always was. [...] We presented [Sam] as immune to [demon Lilith's] powers. We have some twists and turns in store with that. Sam promised Dean right before Dean died that he wasn't going to pursue any of his powers in terms of discovering his potential. Upon Dean's return, Sam tells him "I promised I wouldn't head down that road because you made me promise," but we begin to wonder if indeed that is the truth. For whatever it's worth, the writers have never been this excited about a season. We have some really exciting plot twists.
    (source: TV Guide Online)
  • Lauren will not be coming back next year. [... In Season 4,] we're gonna spend a little less time talking about giant movements and war and more time talking about the brothers' relationship and how they react to that war. I think we sort of have a new species of supernatural being that we'll be introducing in season four that will take people by surprise. [...] In terms of Mary, we're definitely delving into all of that. I think my goal is to answer those questions sooner than people are expecting us to. I think in the first half of season four we'll actually answer a lot of those questions. [...] We have the Croatoan virus on our board of ongoing mythology, and it will return in some form or another that we're working on.

  • Kripke has promised that there will be a lot of back story about Mary Winchester next year, and he's even toying with the idea of showing John and Mary when they were teenagers. Everybody loves a good flashback episode. We'll also find out more about the amulet in the near future.
  • For those hoping that the Winchester boys would successfully vanquish Lilith by season's end, it doesn't look like it's going to happen. She's going to play a large part throughout the next season of the series.
  • Prison Break's Dameon Clarke will be guest staring this November as a middle-class father who begins to freak out when he realizes he's turning into a terrifying fly-like creature
