About the Show

Supernatural is a freak. It's a mutt. It's a Frankenstein's Monster of pretty much everything I love - horror, comedy, urban legends, classic rock, Joseph Campbell, Route 66, Westerns - all stitched together into one bloody, twitching package. -- creator Eric Kripke, from a Titan Publications press release

Bound by tragedy and blood to a dangerous, otherworldly mission, two brothers travel the mysterious back roads of the country in their '67 Chevy Impala, searching for their missing father--and hunting down every evil supernatural force they encounter along the way.

Supernatural airs Thursdays at 9 EST on the CW. It is currently in summer reruns. Season five will begin on September 10th. You can also stream whole episodes free on the CW's official site.

Pilot Quote

Sam: I swear, man, you gotta update your cassette-tape collection.

Dean: Why?

Sam: Well, for one they're cassette tapes, and two- Black Sabbath? Motorhead? Metallica? It's the greatest hits of mullet rock.

Dean: House rules, Sammy. Driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cake hole.

One Reviewer's Comments on the Music

This is a world of auto repair shops and roadhouses, of credit card scams and pool hustling, where your genius from MIT has a mullet and drinks PBR, the hotel rooms are stuck in time and the music is wall-to-wall classic rock.

The soundtrack of Supernatural could easily support its own essay -- it has one of the best on TV right now. From the Allman Brothers to Bad Company to 'Carry On My Wayward Son', the music is the self-described Greatest Hits of Mullet Rock. (The Rolling Stones and Jefferson Airplane have also been featured.) It fits perfectly in with the grimy road-trip through America vibe that Supernatural gives off, and like the show, the music choices never take themselves too seriously. Many of them are predictable - a show about death just screams for 'Don't Fear The Reaper' - but just as many aren't, and most of them will leave you with a big grin on your face.

Kind of like Supernatural itself.

~ from Thud: Something 'Supernatural'

Will There Be a Soundtrack Album?

At ComicCon 2007, creator Eric Kripke reported that he would like to do one, but Warner Brothers isn't interested because they feel there are already a ton of classic rock compilations out there, and they don't think there's an audience for another one.

At the Salute to Supernatural LA 2008 con, Kripke said Warner Brothers is still unconvinced, but he's trying to get iTunes to make a canon soundtrack list.

Listen to Season One Music

Here is a collection of many of the songs from season one that you can listen to right here.

Does "Gasoline" by The Living Daylights actually exist?

Um, maybe? Most people who think they have "Gasoline," by The Living Daylights, actually have a version of the song by Seether, and Supernatural music geeks have been scouring the internet for the Living Daylights' cover of the song for years without success.

Recently, it was suggested on the CW message boards that the WB had incorrectly attributed the song and it was actually a cover by an artist called Ginger (possibly one of these two?). A music file matching the song playing in the pilot was provided for download, but full details are still uncertain.

Anyone with more information about "Gasoline" and its various covers, real or imagined, is invited to contact me at the link provided above.

Born Under a Bad Sign Quote

Sam: What'd you find out?
Dean: You checked in two days ago under the name Richard Sambora. Of course, I think the scariest part of this whole thing is the fact that you're a Bon Jovi fan...

So, What Kind of Music Does SAM Like?

Anybody who watches the show knows what Dean's taste in music is like, but Sam's is almost entirely unknown.

Even by Kripke, apparently.

At the 2007 ComicCon, the good folks from Whedonopolis attended the Supernatural press interview and reported the following from their conversation with Kripke:

Okay, and since we're talking music, what in blazes is Sam's problem with Dean's music? And given the chance, what music would Sam play?

EK: (laughs out loud) We have interesting debates about that all the time; about what Sam's music would be, and you know, I hope that Sam listens to whatever cool modern music is. I don't know any of them because I don't listen to anything after 1980, so, you know... Green Day, I guess? I don't know! Who is cool these days? Is Green Day cool? What band is cool these days?

Maybe Red Hot Chili Peppers...

EK: Yeah, so he listens to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Fall Out Boy and maybe The Killers? I am so a stranger in a strange land when it comes to those bands that that's why you never hear Sam's soundtrack, cos I don't know that music and I'd choose the wrong songs. All my friends call me "Old Man Kripke" because I don't listen to any bands after 1980; that's why Dean's music always wins out, because I hate so much modern music that I can't bear to listen to it in the editing room. (laughs)

You can read the full set of interviews (including Kripke, star Jensen Ackles, and writer Ben Edlund) here.

Supernatural Trivia

Jensen Ackles, who plays older brother Dean Winchester on the show, is friends with musician Steve Carlson and has sung back-up for several songs on his albums "Spot in the Corner," "Groovin' on the Inside," and "Rollin' On," including "Come Around More Alabama," "Hummingbird Billy," "Wasted Jamie," and "Rocking Chair." On Carlson's latest album, "Stripped Down," Jensen co-wrote the tracks "Where My River Flows" and "Love You or Leave You."

Jensen is also friends with LeAnn Rimes (they once attended the American Music Awards together) and was once rumored to be dating Jessica Simpson, although she has denied a romantic relationship.

Jensen Singing At the Asylum Convention

In May 2007, Jensen Ackles attended the Asylum Convention in London. Another of the guests was his friend, musician Jason Manns, and the two sang together during Jason's concert at the event.

Jason later wrote: I knew people would be waiting to see Jensen sing as well, so I spoke to him about it earlier in the week, and he just said "we'll see." which I understood totally, it's tough to just jump infront of 700 people! when he got there before the show he gave me the negative, he was super tired, still a bit jet-lagged, etc, which, again, was fine with me, he had been working all day, I only had to work for the next hour. When I started "Crazy Love" I was trying to explain why he WASN'T going to sing, but it didn't work. lol. everyone just started clapping and screaming for him, so I looked over like, "sorry about that bud." but he came up and did his thing, and sounded great. ( i know ya'll couldn't hear him that well, but he was right in my ear and he was spot on.) so it was definitely nice of him to get up for everyone, and I'm glad he did.

Jason has since persuaded Jensen to record a version of the song together. It can be downloaded on his MySpace page. (Crazy Love JJ)

More Stalker Talk

Jared, Jensen, and Jeffrey talk about their favorite music

In high school, Jensen Ackles's favorite song was Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird," though he said in a March 2007 interview on the Jimmy Kimmel Show that he has since "moved on."

In an October 2006 interview, People Magazine asked Jeffrey Dean Morgan:

People: Do you guys like '70s metal as much as your characters?
Morgan: The '70s metal is more my deal, but I think they like more the dance mix and techno, especially Jared - he really likes his techno pop (laughs). Jensen is the one with the record collection - Yanni, Barry Manilow.

Given the playful relationship shared by "JCubed," this fan thinks Jeffrey was probably kidding about Yanni and Barry Manilow. But who knows?

In an extremely, um, illuminating interview with the Norwegian magazine TOPP, Jensen ribs Jared about the number of downloaded tracks he has on his iPod and Jared lists some of his favorite musicians as Pearl Jam, Griffin House, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, AC/DC, and Led Zeppelin. Jensen says, "I'm more of a fan of singer/songwriters. I like Jeff Buckley, Jack Johnson..." (Jensen once listed Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" as his favorite song.)

More recently, in an October 2007 Variety interview, Jensen listed "Three songs that mean a lot to me" as "El Paso," by Marty Robbins, "Texas Flood," by Stevie Ray Vaughan, and "Home," by Marc Broussard, and said the "Song currently playing in my iPod" is "Staggolee," by Pacific Gas & Electric.

In an interview with SFX, Jared listed the contents of his iPod as:

Ten songs on my iPod... 'Little Wing' by Steve Ray Vaugh....I know it's a Jimi Hendrix song, but I love is cover of it. 'State of Love and Trust' and 'Rearview Mirror' by Pearl Jam. 'February Stars' by Foo Fighters. 'Untitled # 1' by Sigur Ros. 'Fake Plastic Trees' by Radiohead...how many is that?...But who's counting? [laughs] 'Taylor' y Jack Johnson. 'Vodoo Child' by Jimi Hendrix...I like this question! I really do! 'Round Here' by Counting Crows. And...'Amsterdam' by Coldplay

Other Talented Cast Members

Jensen isn't the only one who has sung at cons. Frederick Lehne, who played the Yellow Eyed Demon (Azazel), and Travis Wester (Harry Spangler) have also performed onstage for the fans.

More Supernatural Music Talk From Eric Kripke

At the 2008 Salute to Supernatural LA con, Kripke was asked if there would ever be Zeppelin on the show. He said that would be a dream come true for him, but they cost millions of dollars and are very picky about what their music is associated with, so he thinks there probably won't be. However, he said he's heard that AC/DC and Quiet Riot love the show.

He also said budgetary restrictions were the reason for the comparative lack of classic rock in season three. He said they always go over budget and when they do, the music is often the first thing that has to go.
