Treasure from the Sea

Seaglass is a true case of one person's trash becoming someone else's treasure. Comprised of discarded fishing floats, bottles and other glass items which have broken and been tumbled smooth by tides and time, seaglass is an extraordinary prize from the deep.

So...what do you do with it???

Sure, seaglass is pretty. It looks nice sitting there in a jar on your windowsill, maybe amongst some shells. But...what else is it good for???

Well, seaglass can be used in a variety of art projects.
*You can wire-wrap it for use in jewelry.

*Design a mosaic serving tray, or (if you have a lot)a table-top.

*Embed it in a clay or polymer clay medium so that both sides are exposed...a form of stained glass!

These are just a few quick suggestions. Let your imagination run wild!

Some Seaglass Hunting Tips

My own passion for seaglass began about 20 years ago when my aunt and cousin showed me some jars of seaglass they had collected on Cape Cod. I began looking for it myself the next time I went to the coast, and now I have a vast collection!

Here are some of my seaglass hunting tips:
*the best time to look for it is after a storm
*I go early in the day or late in the evening when the sun's sharp angle catches the glint off the glass better
*I find more seaglass in areas where there are nearby offshore rocks.

My Favorite SeaGlass Haunts

I am a bit reluctant to write this segment... I feel like I am giving up a secret which might lessen the productivity of these sites! But, in the spirit of abundance, I will tell you the locations which have yielded my best, and most, seaglass finds.

*West Palm Beach, FL in the area of Singer Island.

*North Carolina's Outer Banks

*several small virtually inaccessible coves along the cliff walk out of Sutton, Ireland heading towards Howth

*the beach at Skerries, Ireland

and possibly the grand-daddy of them all,
*Seapoint, Ireland in the area of Brighton Vale

SeaGlass Links

I was surprised by the number of seaglass related websites out there. Here are some of my favorites.

I also happen to love cats.
