When the Surf's Up, It's Time To Hit the Surf!

Surfing. Body surfing. Boogie boarding. Skim boarding. Hitting the waves!

You could be catching the waves in Bali, or Guam, or Hawaii, or Hermosa Beach, or Monterey, or Miami, or Costa Rica.... thrill of riding the waves can make all of these places seem special.

I spent my teen-age and early adult years on Guam and had my share of watching waves of all shapes and sizes--sometimes the waves were small and mild, sometimes the waves were huge, towering monsters rushing in towards the shore.

Obviously, beginners should only mess with the small, mild waves. Only professionals with many years of experience should mess with the "big ones".

And the big caveat--don't try surfing unless you are a good swimmer!

In any case, riding the waves has become a worldwide phenomenon--mostly in the tropics, but in a few places even in the temperate latitudes.

It's a strange sport...  there is some competition, but it's usually with oneself with individual bests..   but there's also the competition amongst the professionals, but that's another story.

Surfing has an almost spiritual nature to it--like a oneness with nature and feeling the awesome power of the waves!

Surf's Up! Read Up!

History of Surfing.... Surfing's Origins...

Surfing originated in Hawaii... The Hawaiians had been surfing for generations long before the Europeans stumbled over the islands. The first European record of surfing in Hawaii was written by Lieutenant James King--one of Captain James Cook's crew--in 1779.

Surfing was a sport of Hawaiian royalty... with the Hawaiian chiefs maintaining their authority and leadership by being expert with manuevering their long, hardwood boards in front of the waves.

However, in 1821 surfing was banned by European missionaries (they called it "immoral"). By the early 1900's, few Hawaiians surfed.

Surfing was "reborn" when Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku of Heleakala--an Olympic Gold Medalist in swimming in 1912 and 1920 and Olympic Silver Medalist in 1924--started entertaining tourists with his expertise on the waves.

He traveled extensively, and on a visit to Australia, he invited a local woman, Isobel Latham to join him for a tandem ride at Freshwater Beach--she became Australia's first surfer.

Kahanamoku provided demonstrations of his surfing expertise in New Jersey and other West Coast locations.

On his return to Hawaii, Kahanamoku not only was a tourist ambassador and Honorary Sheriff of Honolulu for Hawaii, but he also was a driving force for rejuvenating surfing as a world sport.

Surfing is now a world-wide sport, with practitioners around the world driving surfing-related tourism in the search for the perfect waves.

Hang Ten! -- Hazards of Surfing!

The term "Hang Ten" comes from hanging all ten toes over the front of the surfboard--a tough act to follow.

Hazards of Surfing

Aside from the thrill of riding a thundering wave, there are consequences to being slammed into a coral reef by the water. Almost two-thirds of injuries come from being smacked by a surfboard nose or being sliced by the surfboard's fins. Sometimes you can also get banged by others' surfboards.

Then, you have the hard things under or above the water--like boulders, coral heads, piers, or boats.

And, of course, you have to deal with the critters that live in the various watery habitats you are surfing in. Critters like sharks, stinging jellyfish, fire coral, stingrays, barracuda, sea urchins, stonefish, lionfish, cone shells and other critters.

Not to mention the danger of undertows, riptides, hypothermia, and the associated risk of drowning.

But hazards aside, this sport is still a thrilling ride and lots of fun. (Hey, if you go camping in Montana or New Mexico, there's always the risk of rattlesnakes, mountain lions, bears, skunks, coyotes, wolves, and so on... but this is no reason to not enjoy the great outdoors, right?)

The World's First Surfing Mice - The Radical Rodents

You will not believe your eyes !!! Hello we are the Radical Rodents, the coolest and hippest mice in the world. We are all mad keen surfers and as far as we know are the only rodents in the world that surf, which would make us the world's smallest surfers. Our names are Chopsticks, Bunsen, Harry & Curly and we have been surfing for over 3 years. We love living here up in sunny Queensland because we get to surf most of the year as the water is warm and the weather is mild. Also there are lots of stinking rich folk with massive boats that deliver the waves which we long to ride. We mainly surf in rivers and estuarys as we are only very tiny, but as you will see we get some very nice waves indeed and on the weekends when the boats are out it is very consistent. To all you brave mice out there at home who think this sounds like a groovy idea, please do not try this. We are trained proffessionals and have endured a lengthy process learning how to swim and how to balance on a board. All the team is in our last season of surfing as we are all getting old and as mice we live for approx 3-4 years. We have already started showing some of our offspring the ropes and Bunsen's son Junior has already caught a few and will be joining the team soon. The new generation are as keen as mustard and we all look forward to seeing them take over the reins so we can retire. We are currently putting together our website www.radicalrodents.com, so it should be up and running in a couple of months. Here you will be able to keep up to date with all our sessions, buy merchandise and we will also be selling our old boards too all signed up. Also we are going to be bring out our own surf film and doco in 2007, as we have been filming our antics for the past couple of years. We will be looking for sponsers for both ourselves and for our first film. Anyway sit back and enjoy the clip, i think you will be pleasently suprised at our talent, you will be sure to get the giggles too. Look forward to all your responses, Keep surfing always Love The Radical Rodents
