Surgical Technicians Are A Cut Above
Nurses work in the operating room and function as scrub nurses, as well as circulating nurses. There is another member of the surgical team, the surgical technician, or commonly referred to as the scrub tech. These men and women are trained specifically for passing instruments in the OR. Training programs range from a 1 year program to 2 years. Some even offer an associate's degree.
I worked the first 15 years of my OR career as an LPN (licensed practical nurse). I was considered equivalent to a surgical tech. My surgical training was on-the-job. I learned an appreciation for these skilled OR workers.
I'm going to feature t-shirts, mugs, canvas tote bags, and other items dedicated to the Surgical Tech. If you know a surgical tech, here is a great way to tell them you know how hard they work and thank them for doing an important job!

What Is A Surgical Technologist?
A surgical technologist is the person who is specifically trained to manage the sterile field in the operating room. They pass the instruments to the surgeons, ensure that equipment functions properly, and assist by holding retractors, suctioning, and sometimes, suturing. They have a thorough knowledge of sterile technique and police their area to insure things remain sterile throughout the procedure.
Surgical techs must possess cool heads, quick minds and iron stomachs. Their duties include prepping and sterilizing the OR for surgery, transporting patients to and from the OR, passing instruments to the attending surgeon, retracting the patient's tissues and suturing incisions.
