An artistic Christmas Gift Idea

Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the early 1920's, and is best known for the paintings and sculptures of the group members, though they had a deep philosophy as well.

Surrealist works feature the element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non sequitur; however, many Surrealist artists and writers regard their work as an expression of the philosophical movement first and foremost, with the works being an artifact. For instance their leader Andre Breton was explicit in his assertion that Surrealism was above all a revolutionary movement.

Surrealism developed out of the Dada activities of World War I and the most important center of the movement was Paris. From the 1920's on, the movement spread around the globe, eventually affecting the visual arts, literature, film, and music, of many countries and languages, as well as political thought and practice, philosophy and social theory.

The main aim of surrealism was to express the fundamental nature of thought. Keep that at the back of your mind as you take a look at the calendars that feature surrealist art. Certainly many of these images have more to do with dreams than our ordinary reality.

Alex Grey 2010 Wall Calendars

Every once in a great while an artist emerges who does more than simply reflect the social trends of the time. These artists are able to transcend established thinking and help us redefine ourselves and our world. Today, a growing number of art critics, philosophers and spiritual seekers believe they have found that vision in the art of Alex Grey.

His images roam the internet and use spiritual symbols as much as biological references. His art plays with the grids of our modern life while never becoming clinical. He uses vibrant colors and classic composition.
