Survival Skills For You & Me
Survival Skills
3 Steps To Get Started
2) Prepare a plan and give each family member a copy. Discuss with family members the various emergencies and disasters that can happen and how to respond to each of them. Designate an "emergency check in contact" and make sure your children memorize this number. This is really important in case you get separated, or it proves difficult or dangerous to go home. See the Emergency Preparedness List below to get started.
3) You should have emergency supplies stocked in your home that will meet you and your families needs for at least 3 days. Copies of all your important papers ( or the originals, it is recommended you keep important documents in a safety deposit box ) should be kept in one safe place. Keep all the necessary supplies in a specific designated area so that you can-" grab & go "-in case it is necessary to evacuate. Include plans for family members with disabilities or special needs and your pets.

Disaster Kit Items
-This is a list of must have items in any disaster kit. Keep them together in one safe place that is easily accessible in case you must evacuate. Your safety, health and possible survival could depend on it.
Water
- A 3 day supply of water is recommended per person. Each person and pet should have 1 gallon of water each day.
4 family members + one pup = 5 gallons /day x 3 = 15 gallons of emergency water on hand.
Food
- A 3 day supply of non perishables is the minimum you want to have stored. Food such as canned meat, beans and vegetables, peanut butter & other high energy food, canned fruit and juices, unsalted cracker, etc. Include utensils and other supplies for eating and a non-electric can opener.
-Canned pet food
First Aid Kit
-Your first aid-kit should include a first-aid manual, sterile dressing to stop bleeding, sports wrap for sprains or other injuries, safety pins to close sports wrap, bandages in various sizes, scissors and tweezers, over the counter pain medication, antibiotic ointment, burn ointment, eye-wash solution, thermometer, cough suppressant, antihistamine and anti-diarrhea medication. Also be sure to include all medicines that you and your children are taking as well as a copy of the prescriptions if possible. Extra eye glasses or contact lenses and supplies.
Personal Care Items
- Include items such as soap, shampoo and conditioner. Toothpaste and toothbrush. Tampons or sanitary pads. Lotion and any other items you simply do not want to do without.
Household Supplies
- You will want to have a battery - powered flashlight and radio with extra batteries. Matches in a water proof container and a few lighters as well. Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each member of the family. A complete change of clothes that includes long pants and shirts. Large, sealing plastic bags ( for waterproofing important documents.)
Identification For All Members Of Your Family
- This list includes your driver's license, photo ID or passport, green card and copies of birth certificates and social security cards. Also include a copy of your pet vaccination records and a photograph of your pet.
Copies Of Important Personal Papers
-The American Red Cross & The Federal Emergency Management Agency recommend that you keep all important family papers in a safety deposit box or other safe location. This includes items such as birth and marriage certificates, social security cards, wills, deeds, and financial information. Health insurance papers and medical cards. Medical records for all family members. Children's school records. Investment papers, record and account numbers. Work permits and immigration papers. Rental agreement, lease or house deed. Car title, registration, and insurance information. Make copies of these documents so you have all the information on hand.
Funds
- You will want to have cash or traveler's checks in small amounts that can be cashed easily. Credit, debit and ATM cards or your checkbook.
Keys
- All your important keys such as house, car and safety deposit box. It is also a good idea to have duplicate sets of these.
Communication Means
- Cell phone with an extra cell phone battery and a phone calling card. Your emergency check in numbers for all the members of your family in case you get separated and a list of important phone numbers.
Coping Items ( if you have extra room )
- Photo's and small keepsakes. Children's small toys or books. Cards as well as a paperback novel.

- Canning at home is again gaining popularity and the reasons are many. For many it is the best way of processing food to extend its shelf life. Canning also makes the products available during off season, making them cheap and helping you save money. Homemade canning will save you from running around places looking for a particular fruit, vegetable and other products.
