2012 - How To Survive The Unsurvivable

Let's imagine that it is already 2012. December 21, to be exact. You turn on the t.v. or go online and the news says that a major catastrophe was about to occur, lets say a nuclear war, between Russia and the United States. The leaders of those two nations has accused each other of detonating a nuclear device in one of there major populated areas, thus resulting in the war. Now your town or city is in the crosshairs of a nuclear intercontinental ballistic missile. It will strike in less than 20 minutes. How in the world will you survive such an unsurvivable situation? And it doesn't stop there. It could be a supervolcano in Yellowstone might blow, or the sun has a premature nova like effect. A comet, meteoroid, or asteroid out in the yonder might be heading straight for New England. So many perils, yet, so little time. Let's find out!

There's not much time left!

Countdown to End of the World

End of the World: December 21, 2012

First Up - What You CAN'T Survive in 2012

Because We Have To Keep It Real

From the question you've probably read earlier, how do you survive the unsurvivable in 2012? We should rephrase that question. What can you not survive in 2012? Well, this shouldn't take long. There are plenty of 'unsurvivable' perils but for the sake of this lens, will just with the ones that are most likely to occur in 2012.

Okay, here's one. The sun turning into a red giant. Though, the sun is not expected to run out of its hydrogen for another 5,000,000,000 years (yes, that's billions), who really knows. To the point, if the sun does becomes a red giant, it would engulf the planets Mercury, Venus, and probably the Earth. The water would instantaneously be evaporated off the planet, spontaneous combustion of all plant life would occur, and the gases that surround the planet would burn off. Any humans, animals, and other lifeforms would be, well, basically be burnt to a crisp, to put is simply. You could not even survive, if not thrive on this planet, anymore.

Gamma Ray Burst
Another one where survival would not be possible, gamma ray burst are caused by s hypernova, basically a supernova on steroids. A ten-second burst would have stripped the Earth's atmosphere of half of its ozone almost immediately, causing surface-dwelling organisms, including those responsible for planetary photosynthesis, to be exposed to high levels of ultraviolet radiation. This will kill many species and caused a drop in temperatures.

Black Hole
There's not much to be said here, as well. If light beams can't escape the gravitational power of a black hole, your for sure can't!

Big Crunch and Big Rip
Though this is not expected to happen for nearly 20,000,000,000(billion) to 1,000,000,000,000(trillion) years, the result would be unimaginable. Basically all the molecules holding you and everything else in the universe together, would come apart, thus, well a devastating end to life as we know.

Drum roll, please. Lastly, a vacuum metastability event. This would be like the big crunch or big rip except all structures will be destroyed instantaneously, without any forewarning.

2012 - What Can You Survive

You Might Be Surprised (or not)

Let's get into it, shall we.

Asteroid, Meteoroid, or Comet Impact
Well, depending on the size of the object, if it is less than two miles wide, you can survive this event, as long as you take the proper shelter. Preferably, an underground bunker is really your only hope. Actually, anywhere that has a pretty good buffer distance from the blast of the impact, like in a mountain, underground, or below the sea's surface.

Nuclear Explosion
Again, a bunker is your only hope. This bunker will need to have proper air filtration systems, water-providing/filtering systems, and enough canned foods to lasts a minimum of three years. We shouldn't, also, have to mention that your bunker needs to protect against radiation.

Other Survivable Catastrophes
Tidal Waves(Tsunamis), Floods, Supervolcanos, and Instantaneous Climate Change.

2012 = Panic

Regardless If Anything Happens or Not

Even if absolutely nothing disastrous happens, there's one thing that will happen. Sheer panic. The thought, alone, of there being just the slightest possibility of the world going into turmoil just makes people go into 'Defcon 5' mode. And to add to that, panic may actually be our 'end of the world' event because of the following reasons:

Supply Shortages
People will buy up food, fuel, and water supplies so quickly that it may lead to a worldwide crisis in which all resources will be gone, thus, causing a man-made famine.

Possible Instantaneous Overpopulation
People around the around may start creating offspring to 'assure the survival of the human species'.

Suicides, Homicides, and Genocides
People scared of dying by worldwide catastrophes will more likely just take their own lives. Others might see justice in killing others just because law enforcement may not exist. Countries might decide to kill off some of their own in an attempt to save their resources.
