Susan Boyle - Lost Cause Or Inspiration For The Ages?

Ranked #19,487 in Entertainment, #215,658 overall | Donates to Operation Helmet

Will Susan Boyle inspire our creative courage?

Our attention spans get shorter, our loyalties shift quicker, we get bored sooner - and the entertainment industry cranks out one overnight sensation after another. What happened when Susan Boyle came along? A wake-up call rang through our living rooms - we'd rediscovered beauty! Not superficial, made-up gorgeousness, no - the truly deep beauty of individual art and expression. Unlike 90 percent of regular cookie-cutter TV fare - Susan Boyle's performance touched our hearts.

I think this happened against our collective wills. We did not expect it - we did not want to expect this: an ordinary woman shamed us with her courage! (And she turned the reigning celebrities into babbling dilettantes!)

Oh, yes - Susan Boyle put us to shame! First, we rolled our eyes. Then, it hit us like a ton of bricks: if she can do this - what have we done with our lives? How hard have we tried? How high have we reached?

This realization is very painful. We have to numb our conscience with screams for Susan Boyle's glory. But what comes next?

When the overnight sensation becomes yesterday's news - will we return to our mediocre existence or will we be inspired to great deeds ourselves?

Will we develop our strengths and present them as our gifts to the world?

What are we learning from the Susan Boyle phenomenon?

Is Susan Boyle a "one-trick pony"?

Will she keep recording for a long time?

What happens when the newness wears off - will we move on and forget Susan Boyle?

Will Susan Boyle sustain her popularity?

Oh, yes - she will keep inspiring us for a long, long time!

Sojourn says:

I don't think she'll be so easily forgotten - particularly if she does something relatively quickly and the publicity specialists probably know they need to strike while the iron's hot.

Tipi says:

Susan is different isn't she! I believe I will enjoy her singing for years to come. She needs to be recorded.

Shelly says:

I tear up every time I hear her sing, "I Dreamed a Dream". May her dreams come true in the nicest of ways!

mbrownauthor says:

I certainly hope she has a long, prosperous career in the music industry. What an inspiration she is!

mulberry says:

I don't think she will be touring or anything but I think she will at a minimum go professional; be in some productions, make some recordings...I'm hoping perhaps she'll do some specials on PBS so that I can watch her!

I'm afraid she'll be gone when the next sensation shows up...

J. says:

Nope.

oneskms says:

I think once the media move on and find the next sensation it will be over for her, but I do feel she will be on the crest of the wave for a while to come yet and hopefully come down financially stable. The media here in the UK are already printing not so good reports which is a shame. Its great to see someone so 'ordinary' can catch peoples imagination - go Susan

mysticmama says:

Unfortunatley, probably not...Our society is just too "superficial" and basis popularity more on "outward appearances" rather than substance. In a world obsessed with Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson and so many others who are famous just because of how they look rather than due to any real skill or talent...the Susan Boyles of the world just don't stand a chance...it really is a sad reflection on the world

Very interesting perspective. You're right - Susan Boyle should be an inspiration to us all. Not just because she can sing so amazingly but because she dared to dream.

My eyes are still wet! This dear lady even reached a soft spot in Simon, who would have thought he could have the face of a choir boy? May just the right opportunities open for this dear lady and may we be gentle with her--be blessed Susan Boyle! Sometimes a bit of glory seems to come to earth, we are so lucky to be witnesses this wonder. Thanks for letting me visit it again and be reminded.
