It seems as if the promo campaign for Of THE LAW is working. I just got ANOTHER large order from Amazon.com. The fruits of my labor are ripe and falling off the tree! At this rate, I'll be selling my projected amount by the end of the year! It's all good news for the book industry too. People are buying books left and right and we're all the better for it.
Because of that, I decided last evening to spread the word across the nation and to the East Coast. I'll be sending out a batch of publicity packets to bookstores and libraries next week in hopes they will want to order my book and even ask me to give a reading. This is an exciting time in my life. With lots of travel and meeting new people, selling the book almost seems secondary. Of course, it's BECAUSE of the book that all this is happening but the new experiences from new towns and new faces is incredible. What a joy.
Until later! Cheers and happy reading, Susan.
July 5th - I thought I'd begin telling you how I spend my days throughout my publicity campaign for OF THE LAW. Well, Tuesday of this week (7/3), I sent out five press packets to bookstores and libraries within a 100-mile radius of where we live. Tomorrow, I'll be sending out five more within the same area. After which, I'll make phone calls to follow-up on my information and tell them I'll be in their area on such-and-such a date and "I'd be happy to pop in and do a reading & signing event at that time."
I've decided to perform much of the publicity activities myself because hiring a publicist, someone like Alice Acheson, can be very expensive. So, I use her sparingly and only when absolutely necessary.
Well, that was Tuesday's work. I haven't begun to work today except to post to my lens. So, you'll be hearing back from me on what I'll be working on today.
Until then, keep on writing! Sincerely, Susan.
AND ANOTHER THING...
How can I forget all of the ways I've been involved in online publicity. If you check out another site, http://linktiles.com/profile.php?i=2658, you'll be able to see all of my many links within just one single site. It's a great way to send people to all of your sites at once!
REMEMBER, NEVER LOSE SIGHT OF YOUR GOALS. If you're a writer, keep writing and improving your craft. Once you have a polished product you can begin your publicity campaign.
Since my reading & signing tour began in May, I've experienced great strides in my career. The word is certainly out about me, that's for sure. I've also been requested to do several critiques of other writers' work which I consider a great honor.
So, I've developed another lens that I'm hoping will bring me a little work. You can find it by clicking on the link below or just searching my name, Susan Wingate.

Writer's Promotional Campaign (dated 6/10/07)
(June 10, 2007 - I'll be away this week and will return on Friday afternoon. At that time, I'll answer any posts I've received. I'm traveling light this time. Talk to you soon! -Sincerely, Susan)
For those writers who are struggling to get noticed, maybe you're unaware of all the hoops a writer must jump through these days. A writer must develop at least a solid understanding for their own publicity campaign. She must market to agents, publishers, book distributors, booksellers, libraries - the list goes on and on. Each targeted market has its own segregate set of rules that revolves around stringent deadlines. A discussion of each of these markets will be saved for another day. We should concentrate on the particulars of you and what you can do right now to market yourself.
Over the last few months when I'm not writing, I've spent time promoting my work. The list below is certainly not every step a writer should take, but it contains some of the major steps. I hope it's useful to you.
Step 1 - You have to have a good product - a book, eBook, audio book, chap book - whatever your work is in order to begin the promo process. Once your product is ready to be released (this means you have a final version of your work in hand), the promo campaign can begin.
Step 2 - The cover letter - one of the most overlooked parts of the process and possibly the most important step. It's your "first impression" step. The cover letter should (a) thank the person it's been sent to for their time and consideration of your work, (b) describe your writing project, (c) give your writing credentials, and (d) thank them again for their consideration of your work and tell them you look forward to hearing from them.
The cover letter shows the recipient you're all business, and that's good, because MOST DEFINITELY the recipient is. They're on the business side of things. They don't want to have to teach you how to act in the business world of writing. We writers sometimes like to think, "If I'm good it shouldn't matter." But, it does, now more than ever. Writers are a dime-a-dozen, the statistics are staggering and if you think about it you're one in 240 million in the U.S. alone who want to write a book. Not all of these 240 million will but ask yourself, "If only 1 percent do write a book, where does that put me?" The answer is 1 in 2,400,000. And, trust me, there are gobs of extremely talented writers out the
