Susie O'Neill - Madame Butterfly

Susie O'Neill was an outstanding swimmer for Australia, winning a medal at every international swimming competition over the period of 10 years. Susie holds a record 35 Australian titles and has won eight Olympic medals. When Susie was 19 years, she created history by breaking Mary T Meagher's 200m butterfly world record to become Australian swimming's only female world record holder. As a result of this feat she gained the nick name Madame Butterfly.

At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics Susie became a star of the pool when she won gold, silver and bronze medals and became Australia's most outstanding Olympic performer since Shane Gould in 1972. In the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Susie won a record eight medals, with six of those medals gold. This gave Susie the record for the most gold won at a single Commonwealth Games.

Susie O'Neill's final Olympic Games were in Sydney in 2000. She won one gold and three silver medals. In total Susie won eight Olympic medals, equaling Dawn Fraser's Australian record of the biggest medal aggregate.
