ENTER THE WORLD OF "SUSPENSE!"
Suspense 1942-1962
Introduction
The most prestigious show on American Radio premiered on June 17, 1942, although an on air audition, part of the series "Forecast," took place on July 22, 1940.
Originally broadcast from New York the show moved to Hollywood on January 26, 1943. The host of the show, "the man in black" played by Joseph Kearns and Ted Osborne.
Film stars flocked to the show, the reason being producer, William Spier. Spier, producer during the show's "golden era" personally involved himself in every aspect of the show, writing, voice, sound effects and music, molding an audio masterpiece. Each week Spier and music composer Lucien Moraweck plotted the music giving it a job to perform. The same was true of the sound effects, Bernie Surrey, the soundman, went through the script with Spier, everything, even the smallest detail was calculated for effect. However each person who worked on the award winning show was free to improvise, even when the show was on air. In Surrey's opinion the soundman must become one of the actors, he must feel the emotional flow of the story and be ready to respond at once if something unexpected happens on the air.
The stars knew the quality of production, and knew that being part of such a prestigious product would enhance their reputation. However, no matter the star, the story was the thing; each script fine-tuned to the actors talents. Spier spent little time with the stars, requiring just a few hours rehearsal before broadcast; he wanted them tense at the microphone. Spier became known as "the Hitchcock of the airlanes."
The show began during wartime. It opening theme becoming one of radio's best known and best remembered. First came the ringing of soft church bells, intermingled with faint, tense music. The early shows had a touch of Victorian melodrama; the show had a tingling quality, of time running out or of fate closing in.
The narration enhanced the atmosphere,...
"the hushed voice and the prowling steps...the stir of nerves at the ticking of the clock...the rescue that might be too late or the murderer who might get away...we invite you to enjoy stories that keep you in...SUSPENSE!"
Very rarely did the murder get away, because it was one of Spier's all-but-unbreakable rules that evil must never triumph. Another rule was that realism must be paramount; stories of science fiction and the supernatural were seldom heard. It was his idea to open each story with an air of predicament, a situation of disaster and/or bewilderment. Suspense was mainly concerned with the ordinary man or woman caught up in a situation that intensified and soon became unbearable. The solutions were often withheld "until the last possible moment." However, there where exceptions, Orson Welles show Donavan's Brain Part One and Part Two was science fiction, and The House on Cypress Canyon, about a couple who encounter a werewolf in their newly rented home, verged on horror. August Heat, a supernatural tale propelled Ronald Colman to a date with fate, and a man with a knife, a chilling sequence foretold on a tombstone. The popularity of such shows caused Spear to produce one or two a year. However, usually the kicker of the show was something as simple as an automobile accident. Such an accident formed the story Dead Ernest, were the victim is in a cataleptic coma resembling death, the result being a race against the embalmer's knife.
The most famous of all SUSPENSE, stories is without doubt, Sorry, Wrong Number, written by Lucille Fletcher. Nothing supernatural here, just the intensity of Agnes Moorehead's performance, she was known to collapse across the table at the end of the show. It horrified the nation on its first broadcast on May 25, 1943, and it broke Spier's own rule, the murder got away and the horror of the tale is the woman's pathetic death. It was done seven times on the show and by its fourth performance it had obtained the status of an urban legend. People within the industry asked permission to attend, although neither Spier nor his successors allowed an audience. Moorehead spent six hours before the performance in intense preparation going over the script with Spier and Surrey. She always read from her original script, believing it to bring good luck. Her reliance on Surrey was well known; the intricate timing between the two was noted. Moorehead picked up an imaginary telephone in tandem with Surrey's sounds, she dialed when he dialed, and her scream was rehearsed to the pitch of the train's whistle.
Spier's ideas were continued by those who followed him, casting the usual villain Peter Lorre in a gentleman role and the oft-mild Harry Carey in the part of a killer. He cast people not often associated with heavy dram, Lucille Ball, Judy Garland, Donald O'Connor, Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, and singers Lena Horn and Dinah Shore. However, with the advent of television the sponsor Autolite left and from 1955 the big name stars disappeared. Of the 945 shows broadcast at least 900 are in existence.
