Radio's Outstanding Theater of Thrills
These radio shows are guaranteed to leave you in Suspense! Suspense was one of the most popular radio shows of all time running for 20 years.
In this series are
tales calculated to intrigue you, to stir your nerves, to offer you a precarious situation and then withhold the solution... until the last possible moment.
What is Suspense?
Suspense was a radio drama series broadcast on CBS from 1942 through 1962.
One of the premier drama programs of the Golden Age of Radio, was subtitled "radio's outstanding theater of thrills," and focused on suspense thriller-type scripts, usually featuring leading Hollywood actors of the era. Approximately 945 episodes were broadcast during its long run, and more than 900 are extant.
Suspense went through several major phases, characterized by different hosts, sponsors and director/producers. Formula plot devices were followed for all but a handful of episodes: the protagonist was usually a normal person suddenly dropped into a threatening or bizarre situation; solutions were "withheld until the last possible second"; and evildoers were punished in the end. Initially, the program made only occasional forays into science fiction and fantasy — notable exceptions include adaptations of Curt Siodmak's Donovans Brain and H. P. Lovecrafts "The Dunwich Horror" — but by the late 1950s such material was regularly featured.

Extremely well produced and directed, Suspense represents the pinnacle of the medium. Over 900 episodes were broadcast between 1942 and 1962. The majority were crime dramas, but the producers often ventured into the Science Fiction, Adventure, and Horror genres as well. Unless otherwise noted, all shows were half- hour format.
Old Time Radio on Wikipedia
Old-Time Radio (OTR) and the Golden Age of Radio refer to a period of radio programming in the United States lasting from the proliferation of radio broadcasting in the early 1920s until television's replacement of radio as the dominant home entertainment medium in the 1950s. During this period, when radio was dominant and the airwaves were filled with a variety of radio formats and genres, people regularly tuned in to their favorite radio programs. In fact, according to a 1947 C. E. Hooper survey, 82 out of 100 Americans were found to be radio listeners. The end of this period coincided with music radio becoming the dominant radio form and is often marked in the United States by the final CBS broadcasts of Suspense and Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar on September 30, 1962.

- I love Suspense it is "the" American Old Time Radio Show. Ran right through the golden age. To my mind the best years where under William Spier. Love Elliott Lewis but he more or less turned it into a sort of "Gangbusters," changing the end theme. He was real true crime buff.Of course after 1954 it did start to decline, all the money was gone and so where the big stars, but more so the writers left for television.
So glad you like the show and have done this lens.
