Sustainable Organic Vegetable Gardening -- Healthy and Green!
With all the alarm about Genetically Modified (GMO) corn causing organ damage to humans (we all know that corn is in almost every packaged food in the supermarket) and the e coli issues with factory farmed spinach and tomatoes, I'm sure that you're thinking that maybe the organic craze isn't so crazy after all. We all want to feed our families GOOD FOOD. Sustainable Organic Vegetable Gardening is healthier for humans and animals and better for the planet.
If you've checked the prices on organic veggies at the supermarket or your local health food store, you've probably suffered sticker shock. Well, I've got great news for you. Organic Vegetable Gardening will not only pay pennies on the dollar, but will also be helping to save our planet. Walking out the door to the garden to pick a tomato doesn't use any foreign oil in transport, and the tomato didn't come from halfway around the globe. No herbicides or pesticides were used in its growing, which is better for the birds, the bees and your family. And no nitrogen fertilizer was used to grow it, so your veggie growing isn't causing dead zones like the ones in the Chesapeake Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, where no fish nor water plants can grow.
But how do you get started if you've never gardened before? Organic Vegetable Gardening isn't all that hard if you've got a good plan and a few directions to get you moving.

Planning your Organic Vegetable Garden
There's a very simple method for starting an Organic Vegetable Garden without having to dig up any sod or ground. Simply stake out a 4' X 8' patch that gets good sun (approximately 6-8 hours during the day) cover it with newspaper and organically grown hay, grass clippings, or leaves, leave it for a few days to kill off the grass underneath, then plant through the cover by digging small pits to plant your pre-started seedlings. Wow, no strenuous digging, and it's already mulched nicely! 4' X 8' beds are a nice size. Make sure to leave paths around your beds, since you won't want to step in them. That good heavy mulch coating keeps the weeds at bay and preserves moisture so you don't have to drag out the garden hose very often at all.Applying some easily made Organic Compost will help your plants grow strong and healthy. Plant some yellow, orange and red nasturtiums or marigolds in a bed within sight of your garden. They'll attract the winged pests away from your food plants.
My favorite to grow is red ripe and tasty tomatoes.
Sustainable Organic Vegetable Gardens that are heavily mulched and have good compost levels are less water intensive, and survive heat and heavy rains better than conventionally grown plants.
For those who don't have a back yard, don't give up! Many types of vegetables and herbs can be grown organically in containers on a patio or balcony, as long as there's a few hours of sun a day. Just make sure the potting soil you purchase is organic! Boost its effectiveness by creating a small compost bin for your organic waste and feeding your plants often.
