Agua Dulce History

Our roots extend back to 1999, when Agua Dulce Vineyards, LLC was founded by Don and Cathy MacAdam and their long-time friend and colleague Ray Watt. Their vision, our vision, was to bring viticulture and winemaking back to Los Angeles County and bring great wine back to the American dinner table.

Back to Los Angeles county? Many people identify northern California with the state's wine industry, but as it turns out, the history begins here. In the late eighteenth century, the earliest wine grapes in the state were planted in southern California for wines used by Franciscan missionaries. By the early nineteenth century, California saw its first European varietals planted in Los Angeles. Prohibition and subsequent urban expansion didn't leave much room for vineyards, but the great geography and climate, which provided the foundation for the industry, remains. In particular, our vineyards reside in the tiny town of Agua Dulce, in north Los Angeles County at an elevation of about 2800 feet. Here, they benefit from nutrient rich soils, gorgeous clear days of sun, mild daytime temperatures and cool evenings - a grape paradise! The MacAdams and their renowned winemaker, Jim Yerkes, produced the inaugural vintage of Agua Dulce vineyards' wines from estate-grown fruit in 2001.
