What is Swagapalooza?

Swagapalooza is an event for the world's most influential bloggers and tweeters to network and learn about new consumer products. The idea behind Swagapalooza is to 'liberate' the world's best swag for the world's top influencers. Here is how one blogger described it:

"What is Swagapalooza? It's just about the most fun, casual, unpretentious PR event you can possibly go to." —Paula Chang

Why did we start Swagapalooza?

We started Swagapalooza for three reasons.

First, to democratize PR. The goal of Swagapalooza is to give any new consumer product the chance to get massive amounts of buzz, but only if the product is good enough.

Second, to create an ethical and transparent way for companies to connect with bloggers. Bloggers at Swagapalooza are under no obligation to write about any of the products they receive, and those who do must fully disclose. To quote Advertising Age, "Undoubtedly, Swagapalooza will raise the ethical bar for bloggers who review consumer products."

Third, to take some of the amazing opportunities that tech companies have been blessed with in recent years, and to bring these same opportunities to everyone else.

The format of the event

The next Swagapalooza will take place June 20th, 2011 in Chicago. The evening will start with an hour of networking. This will be followed by an opening message by Alex Krupp and then a keynote address from Steve Stockman, author of How to Shoot Video That Doesn't Suck.

The core of the event is 8 individual presentations from product sponsors with 5 minutes of alloted time allowed to each product. In exchange for their time, the product presenters must give their product away for free to each of the bloggers and tweeters present. Each presentation will be done without notes or slides. In addition, there will be a live twitter feed behind the presenter displaying the commentary of the audience in real time. If you think the companies presenting are getting a free pass, think again!

The schedule will be as follows:

6:00pm        Networking
7:00pm        Introductory remarks
7:05pm        Keynote: Steve Stockman
7:15pm        Presentations
8:15pm        Networking

Praise for Swagapalooza

  • "I had a fun time primarily because I had expected some kind of super-smart marketing event, after all, Guy Kawasaki (Super Spamurai) was the keynote speaker. I expected a crass display of bloggers transformed into spammers, Twitting marketing messages all night long because of all the free stuff they were going to get.

It wasn't anything like that. Instead, the presentations were so wonderfully unrehearsed and so funky, and so funny, that at times I thought we might all be in some hidden-camera reality TV show." —Silicon Valley Watcher
  • "Participants of the swag-meet seemed delighted with the outcome so far. Voyage TV, a travel company giving away a free trip for a winning tweet of 140 characters or less detailing a dream vacation, tweeted: "Home run at #Swagapalooza! Big news soon" before the crowd was barely out the door." —Advertising Age
  • "Thanks everyone for making Swagapalooza a great success and a great time!" —Tweet by Stephen Mellert, CEO, Buzz Kill
  • "IdeaPaint was at Swagapalooza. What a great event!" —Tweet by Jeff
    Avallon, co-founder, IdeaPaint
  • "What an amazing night! #Swagapalooza, fun people, awesome ideas, and a Surprise After Party! So many great people collaborating." —Tweet from Maya, CEO, Surprise Industries
  • "What is Swagapalooza? It's just about the most fun, casual, unpretentious PR event you can possibly go to." —Paul Chang, QuiteCurious.com
  • HansEriksson: #swagapalooza It was worth travelling all the way from Sweden for this event. Thanks for letting us in!
  • Scobleizer: #Swagapalooza is like @gdgt in drag. Unusual PR event. More fun than Demo, that is for sure!
  • "The event was really cool and I met a bunch of awesome people. They did not lie when they said that you would get a bag of free stuff - it was ALL ABOUT THE SWAG. I had never been to an event like this before so the concept was new and interesting." —Kira Stackhouse, Nuena.com
  • "The thing that made the whole event successful (aside from the open bar) was that the products were legitimately interesting and the presentations were authentic. The presentations were short and real- and you could enjoy it knowing that no one is obligated to write about anything. And it was actually the most interactive networking event I've been at in a long time- everybody was new and we were all bloggers. Everyone was actually talking to each other, not typing on their laptops." —Scott James, EcoScott blog
