I love all butterflies ...
but the swallowtails are my
favorite type, by far.

Louisiana tiger swallowtails in the road!

Which do you prefer?

M

oths and butterflies are very similar. You know the key differences, right?

Here are just a few:

  • Moths are primarily nocturnal, while butterflies are active during the day.
  • Moths generally have fuzzy, feathery antennae, while butterflies have smooth slender ones.
  • Even the caterpillars give you a clue ~ most fuzzy caterpillars will become moths, while the smooth ones are usually butterfly larvae.
  • A butterfly at rest will hold its wings together above its body, while a moth spreads them out to the sides.

Now you know a little more than you did before, maybe. So then, which is your favorite?

Pick one.

Butterflies rock!

surfsusan says:

I hate moths! Love butterflies alive (not on a wall). The lemon butterfly is the first to show in the spring here in Denmark, so they are close to my heart.

Moths ARE cool, but butterflies are amazing!

Moths rule!

Swallowtail butterflies are large, colorful butterflies that form the family Papilionidae. There are at least 550 species, and though the majority are tropical, members of the family are found on all continents except Antarctica. The family includes the largest butterflies in the world, the birdwing butterflies of Australia (genus Ornithoptera). Reed, Robert D. and Sperling, Felix A. H. 2006. Papilionidae. The Swallowtail Butterflies. Version 7 July 2006. [http://tolweb.org/Papilionidae/12177/2006.07.07] in The Tree of Life Web Project, [http://tolweb.org/]

Swallowtails differ from all other butterflies in a number of anatomical traits. Most notably, their caterpillars possess a unique organ behind their heads, called the osmeterium. Normally hidden, this forked structure can be everted when the caterpillar is threatened, and emits smelly secretions containing terpenes. The adults are often tailed like the forked tail of some swallows, giving the insect its name.

Don't handle butterflies ... their wings are very fragile.

Look, but don't touch! If you're lucky and very still, they might land on you. :)

Butterflies are more beautiful in your garden on a flower than under glass.

Captured without harm.

The best way to enjoy a butterfly is to take a photo or wear art inspired by the creature such as a beautiful pin or a colorful top!
